Got my KR1 today - wasn't impressed. Major disappointment.

Hello! Today I got KR1 in the mail and its performance shocked me. I heavily use EVDO for videoconferencing purpose and I thought KR1 would be my answer for portable Videoconferencing equipment. *sighs*

It kept on disconnecting me every 5-10 minutes. It appears like the router would reboot itself. After that the Internet access will not start again at all unless I reset the power on my few hours old KR1.

I did a search, nothing on this... help? Is my KR1 defective?

Same thing happened to my second KR1. I upgraded the firmware and then it worked normally. Strangely enough, my first KR1, which I got shortly after the release, has worked fine from day 1 and I've never upgraded the firmware.

Oh man... I should have never upgraded my firmware to 1.006 (previously 1.002)

Now my KR1 crashes every 1 to 2 minutes. But this time it is able to restore internet access after every crashes.

Whenever it crashes, status light becomes orange and nothing is functioning for a while.

I really need to find a way to keep this KR1 stable because everytime it crashes, I have to reboot my videoconferencing equipment. My VC equipment has the ability to record every contact anyone makes... if I am away and this KR1 crashes, then my VC equipment becomes a veggie. Unable to record any contact or whatever until I reboot the equipment.

I am not sure if I explained this clearly. I'm flying tonight and I really hope I can get this resolved asap!

Posting log information would be useful to see what the problem is.

On the Kyocera KR1 that we sent to you, there is automatically a CD with all the Firmware versions along with a PDF that steps you through the firmware upgrade process. Be sure to follow those steps - along with NOT having the card in the router when you perform the upgrade (or downgrade).

If your router continues to have problems after the firmware upgrade (and since you got it from us), email or call us and we can arrange for a replacement to be sent.

Hello all and thanks for a great forum -- very helpful.

This issue is dear to me and I would encourage us to work for a solution here. I've had my KR1 for about 4 months now with the exact setup (650/VZ) and the exact issues:

o REV 1.002 crashes sporadically with no recover (2-3X per day)
o REV 1.006 crashes every 3-5 minutes but recovers on reboot within 60 seconds
o Disabling the 802.11 wireless from the administrator completely corrects the issue and the router works flawlessly (albeit wo a major feature)

I have a tried hard-wiring a separate wireless router into the KR1. Result was the KR1 crashes at a slightly reduced rate (1X every 10 minutes or so).

So -- proximity to an 802.11 signal seems to be the culprit. I have tried just every channel and 'auto' with no positive results. I do have a TRUCKER attached to the 650 (need to receive EVDO), so I wonder if that has an effect.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

As noted in the RK1006.bix firmware ISSUES thread, we have seen this bug on occasion.

If disabling Wi-Fi restores stability to your KR1/KPC650 connection (prolonged stability, not a minute or two longer), than obviously there is an problem with your KR1 and you should seek replacement.

Disabling Wi-Fi isn't considered a permanent fix unless you have one of the older/unsupported 'leaky' PC5220 cards (though even the AC580 has shown similar signs of 'leakage').

This would require another WAP to provide Wi-Fi service, which typically works - tmr777's reply is the first I have heard of this work-around failing, though due to the connection drop cycle times I wonder if tmr777's drops aren't related to something else.

Thanks, I disabled the wireless and now my router works flawlessly. Looks like I'll have to return it or get a replacement.

I may have a solution for people in my situation. I loosely wrapped the entire unit (sans antenna) in tin foil and have not had a reboot in 2 days! This is with the wap enabled.

Obvious tin foil hat science here but it worked for me.

Here's the odd thing... while you didn't wrap the KR1's 3-inch external Wi-Fi antenna in foil (presumedly to isolate it from the circuitry), by covering the KR1's housing you would have covered the internal Wi-Fi antenna attached to the circuit board, which would still be emitting/receiving Wi-Fi RF (unless you've disconnected the µFL connector leading to it).

I had been using with an external WAP and originally did it on the thought of isolating from that device (about 6 ft apart). Worked well so I tried my luck with the internal WAP. Two days, no reboots.

I laid out about 24" of foil, placed the device on top, and loosely wrapped the foil to the top over the sides of the KR1. I then pinched the front closed, and pinched the rear in just a couple of spots leaving it loose and open around the antenna and the 650.

Makes we wonder if the new KR1's (one's without this issue) are simply better shielded. A more professional fix may simply involve affixing the foil to the inside of the plastic casing with some spray adhesive.

I have no idea on the thermal implications of this, and only agree that I don't know diddly about this stuff.

I've got the same combination, KPC650, Verizon, and it's been rock solid from day one. I tried it briefly with the 1002 firmware, that seemed OK, switched to 1006 and still fine. This is with and without external antenna/boost gear on the KPC650.

I don't use WiFi that much but when I have, no problems. I don't think I've had WiFi running at the same time as a boosted 650 though.

Oh yeah: I'm supporting my Ubuntu laptop with Ethernet, and for a while there a friend's XP laptop with WiFi.
