Preliminary tests with the WRT54G3G-ST and Merlin S720 resulted in module loading issues. Net result being that no signal level was reported and there was little to no throughput. Resetting didn't help, though we found a strange way to "remind" the WRT what card is was supposed to be talking to. Our tests are still underway. We will report more when we have some useful data.

Here is a teaser pic for ya. The WRT54G3G-ST NAKED Shocked

I *JUST* ordered both of these through Sprint... hmm.... This may be old news but I asked Sprint about the Franklin USB and they are not selling them through Sprint yet, just through Franklin.

Local Sprint store supposedly has the Merlin USB doohickey arriving today or next week. It is Rev A...

Interesting. That's the first I've read on here about the S720 working in the KR-1. Hope that isn't a typo for S620.

Jack,

There are several people using this combination (including me), but there are performance issues. See this thread.

My WRT54G3G-ST with Merlin s720 works fine, I recieved my Linksys on Monday from Sprint.

It has performed great so far. Because of the location of the PCMCIA slot on my desktop I was only getting between 5-700kbps down, with my s720 in the linksys I get 1.0-1.2mbps.

So I get better performance from the card in the Linksys. I attribute this to the router being on top of my desk instead of under it in a mess of equipment and wires though.

I have not had any drop-offs that I have noticed. I set it up to not disconnect automatically (you can set the idle time before it disconnects from the network)

I put my card in the router and pushed the connect button on the router and it has performed flawlessly all week...

I also found that the s720 is very sensitive to position it is in and in some locations in my office it works better with the antenna up and in other places it works better with the folding antenna down. I have found that this antenna position can cut the performance in half!

Appreciate the info...

One point, if we indicate the computer hardware and OS version the information can be more valuable to the curious.

"indicate the computer hardware and OS version"

I have used the s720 card directly in my IBM laptop running XP and in my HP P4 desktop in a PCMCIA card slot also running XP.

I used the card in the WRT54G3G-ST router with Sprint Connection Manager 3.6.4 and it worked fine and then I put the s720 back in my desktop and upgraded the firmward from 125 to 128 using the link on this forum for SCM 3.6.5 and put it back in the router and it still works fine...

We have noted quite a difference in performance between EVDO cards and their orientation, especially when used in the the WRT54G3G-ST while it is standing vertically.

Many of my measurements so far indicate that standing the router vertically (with the PC Card facing upwards) is in fact the worst way to position it. YMMV.

That is interesting, because my mileage does vary... I think it is probably more location sensitive, i.e. your proximity and orientation to the nearest cell towers...

Mine happens to work best in the router, with the router standing vertically and the flip up antenna in the open position.

I should also mention that my Desktop machine is hardwired directly to the router and my laptop is connected to the router via an 802.11b wireless connection. Both computers register that same numbers through http://speedtest.frontiernet.net/ that I posted earlier.

Which means for the S720 that the antenna is sticking out like a flag? Perhaps you're connecting to one of those horizontally polarized cell sites. :]

So, I just ran about 20 different speed tests, They averaged between 800kbps and 1.2mbps down and from 70-130kbps up. This is up from 300-800kbps from before I upgraded to firmware version 128

I am in Campbell CA, in San Jose for those of you who do not know of Campbell... I still do not see anyway of telling if my s720 now supports Rev a or if the change to the PRL helped performance (whatever PRL is Wink

Anyway, I tested the speed Horizontally with the router laying on it's side and with the s720 facing East and West, and with the cards antenna unfolded and folded, or open and closed, (however you want to think about it) in each position. And with the Router standing up vertically in the included stand, also with the antenna unfolded and folded, or open and closed, like a flag or not like a flag....

So, in some positions I got numbers from the low end of the scale and in other positions I got numbers from the higher end of the scale, but all numbers were within the range given above. Sometimes the numbers were higher with the antenna folded and in other positions the numbers were higher with the antenna unfolded.

So I guess my point is that the user needs to just try different positions to see what works best for them....

lol, well, I am located in a brick building, so I think the waves have to stand up vertically to come in through the front door and down the hall to my office... Laughing

Xactly.

Sprint EVDO PC Cards that lack fold-out antennas such as the Merlin S620 or S5740 didn't fare as well in vertical orientation, at least in the 4 different locations I have tested the Linksys -all within 20 miles of each other, one location being 1xRTT-only, and one location being altitude challenged (250ft higher than the nearby tower).

The differences in speed were fairly significant: 150 kbps down and 30-40 kbps up. So, while the vertical stand saves space, do try it flat.

Note that the same tests were conducted with the KR1 and that the same conclusions were drawn. Since it doesn't come with a stand, most never mount it vertically (unless they wall-mount it... we have some that do that).

This doesn't matter if you're using an external antenna.

Oh yeah, there are some subtle differences between the KR1 vs WRT concerning throughput/latency, depending on which EVDO card you choose and whether you are using Wi-Fi or Ethernet. We'll get to those in a bit.
