Yes Michael, but here is the scary part. Sprint typically execute features nationally and not city by city. My understanding from those who are supposed to know is that Sprint is well underway with EVDO deployment. I am afraid that Sprint will throw the nation wide switch on EVDO while were still deploying city by city coverage at Verizon.
Now excuse me while I run to the tatoo parlor and get my VZW tatoo! |

Looks like Verizon is getting the most PR exposure and announcing new cities and expanded cities individually vs. one big press release. The press releases started yesterday, a bunch today. Probably, more each day. They are posted in the coverage area in EVDOforums and at EVDOinfo.com. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Hi,
I am halfway between NY and PA. I am in Lakewood, NJ (sip code 08701). I currently have Sprint. I was looking in to the Verizon EVDO. Does anyone know if I will be in the New York market ? Also I noticed that Cingular is releasing something does any one know anything about that ? Thanks.

I'm not quite sure what market I'd put you in based on your location, but looking at Verizon's Coverage Locator map, entering your city name and choosing BroadbandAccess/VCast, you're quite a bit away from EVDO. The equivalent 3G high-speed technology for Cingular and their GSM/GPRS/EDGE network would be UMTS. Last I heard about that, they (or the AT&T side of the company, prior to the merger) were testing UMTS in like 3 or 4 cities tops, and they might've even stopped that.
Regarding Sprint vs. Verizon for EVDO rollout from previous posts, yes Sprint usually does stuff nationally, but I'm pretty sure that EVDO won't be that way for Sprint. First, it's not (yet) a killer app for most consumers, not to mention that Sprint's still putting together consumer content for the service once they have it available. Plus, it looks, from the rumored Sprint EVDO rollout plan, like most of Sprint's initial coverage is going to be airports and "business areas", and not so much suburb areas, at least initially.
Verizon's already got coverage in over 40 markets (before the expected upcoming expansion announcement) well beyond Sprint's "airports and business areas", is expanding those markets, and is still turning on new markets as well. But they need to keep on their toes, because if that rumored Sprint plan REALLY happens that way, Sprint's going to have BASIC coverage in more cities than Verizon by the end of the year, giving them that selling point (even though their coverage areas might pale in comparison, the selling point would be more cities). But if Sprint can't expand their coverage to areas beyond their initial turn-up in a good amount of time, it might not be hard for Verizon to catch up and get them beat. If Verizon can pull another 15 or so markets out by October, and continue to expand current markets farther, they'll be doing better than Sprint.
So for now, Verizon leads IMHO. We'll see what the coming months bring. |

The big Phase 4 announcement looks like it may be around 6/27/2005, not 6/22/2005.
Either way, it is coming! |
Michael I was asked to assist with the cut to "live" service of the sites that we installed begining back in January. All along sites were installed and atp'd and left in service after integration by engineering. The cut date was 6/17/05. I opted to work on another project, but didn't hear of any snafu's. In any event the new sites that were installed are up and running, regardless of any official announcement by VZW.

Do you have any idea what the phase 4 rollout consist of.. I live in San Bernardino which is about 50-60 miles outside LA... There is coverage going up all around me, and I just wondered if this rollout would involve my area???
Thanks, Paul |

Paul,
SBDO will be well covered with sites along the SR30, I-215, and I-10. The farthest site out on the I-10 I worked on was in Coachella near the Dillon Rd. exit, so Inland Empire coverage will be greatly improved.

No official announcement yet, and I haven't been west to check it out, but pulling up the coverage map for my area, it shows a lot more coverage in western parts of the DC area than it used to, including almost all of eastern Loudoun County and western Prince William County with some spots stretching into Fauquier, as opposed to just the area around Sterling/Dulles/Chantilly. Also, some spots in Western Loudoun, along Rt. 7 (Hamilton, Purcellville, Round Hill) are now shaded with the BroadbandAccess/VCast color as well.
Panning north into Maryland, it appears that Frederick County is starting to get some EV-DO love as well, with coverage appearing along Rt. 15 and further north along I-270 than before, and all around the Frederick area. Hagerstown, though, still gets no love.
Again, that's just from looking at the coverage maps on VZW's website, so if it's REALLY turned on I don't know, but it looks like they've definitely expanded a bit, or soon will be. |

I posted this in the phone section, but i said I'd check back. So here it is. I wonder if there are many users from Portland yet... If you don't have evdo in your area yet!!!!-Just order the damn thing. By the time it gets to you...-Two Days- You'll have evdo in your area anyways-advertised or not-
ok, charged it... No, it didn't come with the camera. I don't care either way, yet... The lady said it was on it, owell. So, you can't have two phone #'s. They were gonna let me do it anyway when I ordered, b/c I wanted to get rid of carrying two phones, but you'd have to get two data plans, b/c of the different nav settings. screw that, then put my work cell # on the i730 and just kept my personal phone the way it was. I'm on the work # 99% of the time anyways. Initial impression-Awesome. I've got 15 days to see if I keep it. I'll let you know. evdo seems to be damn fast so far. How do I see what my connection speed is????? later |
