Well No one got back to me on this one. I received my TX 007 bundle. I had no problem getting a regular tech support guy to do a ESN swap for me. The TX has the ESN number printed clearly on the bottom on the PC. I don't have Rev. A with the current connection manager, but i didn't have it either with the s620 Novatel that I swapped out. And the good thing is that I didn't extend my contract. I am still one year into a two year contract. And no fees to swap. Good deal. I love my TX and have no problems with the Sprint on it so far. _________________ SonyTX17P&UX90S |

Whenever you do an "ESN Swap", it doesn't affect your contract.
They can be quick and painless. The number we call, it only takes 2 minutes to do.
If you already have a mobile broadband card and want to swap the service onto the laptop, it is the only way to go.
If you just purchased a new laptop and don't have service - it would be smarter to take the opportunity to get one of the deals that Sprint has on a USB modem (great backup for $50) and then let us do an ESN swap to your laptop. You now have a backup EVDO device (in case your laptop breaks, is stolen, or you upgrade), and you don't have to pay retail price to get another device. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

WARNING!!!!
I have had this happen to TWO Sony Vaio TX Laptops so far
The embedded EVDO module works fine for a few weeks and at some point it stops working, no longer will connect. We have a lot of tricks up our sleeves (##RTN, ##DEBUG, ##DATA, ##MSL, etc.,) So, we do the ##RTN trick to reset the modem back to factory settings and after completing this, the embedded EVDO Rev A modem is no longer able to complete IOTA (Activation). Instead, we see a "Unable to update device". The modem is dead.
Here is what we hear from our contacts deep in Sprint Tech Support:
| Quote: | "-Sprint is responsible for activating Sony VAIO laptops on the Sprint network. Sony VAIO laptops are devices that have embedded or built-in EVDO modules that offer wireless connectivity, once activated.
-For account activation, customers are warm transferred by Sony into Sprint's Activation department.
-The Connection Manager software is a Sony proprietary software.
Connection Manager and OS registry issues are to be handled by Sony.
-Sprint assists customers with Network, connectivity, account activation, provisioning and billing related issues.
-Activation is for Data plans only. Customers can choose from any of Sprint's active Data plans.
-Sony provides customers with support for all other issues.
Customer Care may advise customers to contact Sony directly at 1-877-275-VAIO (8246)."
Something else that was stressed in the document:
-Sprint does not sell or service the products. For additional assistance, tell customer to call Sony at 1-877-275-8246.
- Customers MUST choose the "Activate by Phone" option. |
And then we hear this:
| Quote: | | "Novatel had an issue with their pre-production 720's that caused IOTA to consistently fail after the module is refurbed using ##RTN, which sounds like what is happening here. The fix was to send the modules back to Novatel so they could update the certificates." |
This sounds like exactly the problem that we have been having. The problem, is that it is probably going to be a REAL long phone call to Sony, as they are probably not too knowledgeable on this issue.
BTW, when these problems started, I was able to install my Verizon AirCard 595 and the Sprint U720/S720 and use without problem in the PCMCIA slot the Sony Vaio has, defeats the purpose of having embedded EVDO, BUT in this case - proves a LOT more reliable. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

So I'm a little confused here. I currently use the Ovation U720 USB modem from Sprint and am about to pickup one of these laptops. I love the idea of having the U720 b/c I can plug it into any of my Apple notebooks / desktops during times when Comcast flakes out at home.
Michael, will I be able to use use the U720 without problems on the TX? I would much rather keep this modem active so that I could move it between other machines without limiting my account to the TX. |

Ok, i got another question.
I have the vgn-txn15p, and i had been using the integrated card.
I had the opportunity to pick up a cheap u720. I installed it, and it works in NDIS but the sprint connection manager can't see it, so i have no way to change my roaming, or use any of the gps features. How do i make the sprint connection manager see it?!
Thanks for the help

I thought that it would cause problems to use the u720 in a TX. I have the TXN17p. I activated the internal modem.
have you activated the internal modem giggtigga? or you just popped in the u720? _________________ SonyTX17P&UX90S |

I just got a TXN27N and a TXN29N. Do you know if both of these units have the problem(s) listed here? I'm still within the 30 day return policy if they do have these problems. |

Ouch, no one ever reads this second of the forum any more.. Here some new info about the Rev A and stuff.
While I have not been able to confirm, but some people said at the other forums that they are running at Rev A. Speed and also the Connection Manager says Rev A. I have no idea if it's a newer TXN or what though. I myself has been looking at the support page, and it doesn't say anything about the Sprint card other than the original driver. So are the owner of the older TXN out of luck? Cuz I am considering buying a TXN17P7 and it only comes with Windows XP and it was released last Oct I believe. so I doubt I will get the Rev A firmware.. |

I went to the above blog post which hasn't been updated since April. It says: "I wonder how many people of embedded laptops will have the same fate? Was this a problem only with the first batch of units or is this still a problem with the current shipping units?"
Does anyone know the answer to this question? I have a TXN17p. I want to get Rev A with it if I can. I am tempted to try to install the sprint conneciton manager software firmware update... _________________ SonyTX17P&UX90S |
