New announcement from Verizon about Florida Coverage:

Verizon Wireless Expands Broadband Wireless Network Across Florida With Launches in Naples, Bradenton, Lakeland, Saint Augustine

Tuesday September 26, 9:04 am ET

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Verizon Wireless announced today a significant expansion of its wireless broadband network across Florida by launching the company's BroadbandAccess service in Naples, Bradenton, Lakeland and Saint Augustine.

The technology allows customers to utilize the latest high-speed business and entertainment services on their wireless phones, laptop computers and other wireless devices. This wireless broadband experience is made possible by the Verizon Wireless EV-DO (evolution-data optimized) technology, with typical connection speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second (kbps).

The multi-million-dollar network expansion - which entailed installing high-tech wireless hardware and software in dozens of wireless transmission sites throughout the four markets -- adds about 5,000 square miles and nearly two million Florida residents to the area covered by the Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess network. In addition to these new markets, the technology is available throughout Southwest and Southeast Florida, as well as the Jacksonville, Orlando and Tallahassee metro areas.

The expansion is part of an ongoing network investment by Verizon Wireless that has totaled more than $1 billion in the state and $30 billion nationally over the past six years.

"These new markets are important in expanding across the state with the latest wireless network and technology," said Mike Lanman, Verizon Wireless Florida region president. "Florida businesses, consumers and visitors demand the most advanced wireless services such as BroadbandAccess and V CAST Music and video."

BroadbandAccess allows customers to connect wirelessly to the Internet, download e-mail and applications, and log into their corporate servers via their laptop at broadband speeds. The technology provides mobile workers full access, productivity and security, just as if they were at their desks and attached via a high-speed wired connection, but with the freedom of true mobility.

The Verizon Wireless V CAST service gives customers access to short video content, downloadable music, and cutting-edge 3D games on their mobile phones. With V CAST, customers can get short video content on-demand, including current news, weather, sports and entertainment programming. And music lovers with a V CAST Music-enabled phone are able to download and play their favorite songs - all while on-the-go.

In addition to allowing advanced applications such as BroadbandAccess and V CAST, the network upgrade in Florida will further strengthen the Verizon Wireless network in the event of emergencies. The network stood up well to the extraordinary storm seasons of 2004 and 2005, and so far this year, while other communication networks sometimes suffered substantial disruptions.

"A strong, reliable wireless network is critical for the public in large-scale emergencies and every day," Lanman said. "Verizon Wireless will continue to take a leading role in public safety to serve residents, businesses and visitors locally and across the state."

I am stuck in Gainesville this week with only NationalAccess coverage. I know Gainesville is less than a major market, but it would be nice to have it. The office I'm at has no Internet access for guests so it has been kind of slow. Looks like it's just bad timing for me if a BroadbandAccess rollout is coming soon.

Man, I'm a little ticked now. Last week I was in Gainesville and it was NationalAccess only. It was listed on Verizon maps as a *future* coverage area.

Today I look at the Gainesville Verizon map and it is listed as a *current* coverage area.

In a way I shouldn't be mad because I was able to do most of the stuff I needed to online, but there were a couple of times I wanted to make Skype calls and NationalAccess generally gives a pretty low quality to Skype calls.

Well, I guess if I ever go back to Gainesville at least I'll know that the Internet connection will be faster. Smile
