The current PRL for Alltel doesn't have any of the Sprint EVDO information in it so if you roam to a sprint EVDO area you'll be on 1x. The Alltel rep I asked about roaming onto sprint said that the new PRL should be out anytime since they finished testing but it hasn't been released yet. From what I've heard it will be like the Sprint PRL in that Sprint EVDO will be preferred to Alltel 1x or Sprint 1x. _________________ --

| The new PRL for data cards only is to be released today - March 1. Does anybody have it yet? Let us know if you do and if you're actually able to roam to Sprint's EVDO network. I have the PC5740 card but I can only use it in my KR1 therefore I don't think I'll be able to get the new upgrade and if so I won't know since I have no access to the card via the router. I'm in an area that had both Alltel and Sprint EVDO. |

I'll update my wifes card tonight and let you know if the PRL changes. I know when I did on my PPC6700 the PRL was still 30005 so it hasn't changed for the smartphones yet.
I'm considering getting a sprint U720 for my Mac to get rid of the PPC6700 because I want Rev A. If Alltel doesn't come out with a USB card by the 15th I will be ordering the card. I will report if the latency increases for me. My biggest concern is being cut off at some point but I can always go back to Alltel and I do go into Sprint EVDO territory with some frequency so I can use it there and hope it is enough. _________________ --

As I understand it, this PRL update is for data cards only so your 6700 won't be affected.
I have the Sprint U720 as well as the Alltel PC5740. My Alltel data contract runs out soon and although I've been a loyal Alltel customer for years I am going to switch over to Sprint for data since Alltel doesn't appear to be anywhere near upgrading their system to Rev A since they're just getting Rev 0 completely rolled out. Considering the Sprint/Alltel roaming agreement for EVDO I'll just completely switch to the Sprint service and get the best of both worlds. This is assuming (and hoping like crazy too!!!!!) that the KR1 ever releases a firmware update that includes support for the U720. As you may or may not know, the KR1 currently does NOT support the U720. The U720 works in the KR1 but is limited to around 500kbps DL speeds which kinda sux when you're used to speeds as much as three times that!!
For what it's worth my Alltel card gets better speeds in a side by side comparison right now. This is comparing the PC5740 in the KR1 router on the Alltel data network to the U720 connected directly to my PC running on the Sprint network. The Alltel connection averages around 1500kbps DL and around 115kbps UL while the U720 is averaging around 1000kbps DL and around 130kbps UL. Interesting that I'm less than a half mile to the Sprint tower but don't have direct LOS and I am about 3.5 miles from the nearest Alltel tower. Just FYI . . . . . . |

Thanks,
I'm not tied to Alltel at all really I'd just pay the disconnect fee and go with Sprint. I'm in an Alltel only DO area now but I plan to roam until the local Affiliate rolls out DO which is going on now. I travel to Washington DC enough right now and there are other sprint DO areas that I can go to that it wouldn't matter to me if I went with them or not.
Right now I'm mainly waiting to see if Alltel rolls out the USB card and if I can make it compatible with my mac. But if I don't hear anything by the 15th I'll go to sprint and if it works as well as my current setup I'll drop my 6700 from my Alltel contract and go with Sprint.
EDIT:
I don't use the KR1 I have a MB6000 that I use sometimes with my wifes card. We both use Nortel VPN clients for work so we can't use the KR1. I have looked at the Sprint Linksys router but I'm not willing to buy it just yet. _________________ --
