...as some here already know and remember, I've been amongst the loudest screaming for a usb evdo modem for more than 2 years now...
...and I stopped screaming last summer.
What caused me to stop screaming was the realization of how HUGE these suckers are.
I was part of the past year's beta testers for Franklin. I had to admit to them that I lost virtually all interest when the device was shipped to me many, many months ago and I saw how HUGE these devices are.
Now I'm reading that the Novatel u720 is something like 4 inches long. If so, that's probably even bigger than the Franklin model.
What's wrong with these people who design these things? Don't they realize that the whole reason why these things are wanted is because people want them for devices that are TOO SMALL for a PCMCIA card?!
Well, does it take a rocket scientist to figure out that a device that is TOO SMALL for a PCMCIA card is probably also TOO SMALL to have a 4 inch BRICK hanging on its side?
Sheesh.
The two most popular handtops today, the oQo and the Sony UXx80P series, aren't much more than 4 inches WIDE themselves!
So you're asking folks to slap into the side of these things devices that are 80% or more the size OF THE DEVICE ITSELF!
Hello?
Really, Sprint et al, you shouldn't have even bothered and concentrated your resources on rolling out WiMax, etc.
As for me, I'm going to wait until either the oQo, Sony or one of these handheld devices has built in WWAN faster than Sony's UXx80P EDGE. I think we'll finally see that sometime in 2007. |

I have considerably shortened your rant so that I could target the one paragraph that raises this question:
You did not mention the size of the electronics inside to show exactly how small the device could have been made.
In other words, do you have any proof that the actual size has been inflated and that there is a lot of empty space inside the USB devices causing them to be so HUGE?
Compared to my 17" MacBook or Sony Vaio they are indeed quite small. |

Of course the usb modems seem to be bigger than I would like. I bought an usb adapter thing from Belkin the other day that will let me change the angle any usb attachment once I get one of these modems (at least that way I can put it in the least obtrusive angle or the best one for reception. Also I am sure I may use the Y cable sometimes with the port replicator, which means it will be even more out of the way). Would I like it smaller? Sure! But I will settle for any rev A usb modem that is at least as fast as my s620 is now. My Sony ux 90 (same size as USA version 180) only has one port, a usb port. That's it. So not wanting a PC card modem isn't the issue: I can't use one because there isn't a slot/port for it! So the issue for me is one of usefulness rather than beauty/aesthetics. _________________ SonyTX17P&UX90S |
