The Novatel S720 card has a important option to lock out EVDO or 1xRTT. This is a very important feature for those in fringe areas, OR directly centered between a 1xRTT and EVDO tower and their card constantly bounces between two towers and is unable to hold a connection. This update solves that problem by giving the end user the ability to configure their Novatel / Merlin S720 to ONLY listen for EVDO signal or 1XRTT signal (blocking out the other).

Even if you are NOT in a fringe area, you may experience faster downloads by enabling EVDO only. If you enable EVDO ONLY, remember to switch back to Automatic, if you are traveling to non-EVDO areas.

Is the locking behavior any different than S620? When I'm in rural areas with no EVDO, I sometimes have to lock in 1xRTT. Auto mode just disconnects on S620.

Looks like it is exactly the same.

Michael,

My Connection Manager doesn't allow me to select EVDO only for my S720, it's "grayed out". What do I need to do to turn on this option?

edit: Nevermind! I found out that I have to be disconnected to set the option.

EX720 also allows evdo locking. I'm on a macbook pro and got it to work through parallels.
