Apple just released 10.4.8, there are some ExpressCard improvements, we will have to check it out and see if any new EVDO cards are supported.
More later.
| Quote: | What's included?
This update offers many improvements, including the following, which apply to both Intel- and Power-PC-based Macs unless otherwise noted:
Printing
* Adds support for CDSASSL (Common Data Security Architecture Secure Sockets Layer) printer connections.
* Addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.4.7 in which some documents containing some Chinese or Korean language characters might not print as expected.
Finder and Apple applications
* Resolves an issue in which a Finder alert message with the buttons "Initialize", "Ignore", and "Eject" might not appear after connecting a partitioned FireWire hard drive.
* Addresses a potential issue in which Preview may unexpectedly quit.
* Improves reliability of iTunes syncing with certain iPod models.
Networking and modem
* Resolves performance issues that could occur when connecting to a Comcast network.
* Improves security by adding support for EAP-FAST for AirPort wireless authentication.
* Improves Express Card behavior for portable Intel-based Macs.
* Improves reliability for connections made in Ireland with an external Apple USB Modem.
* Improves connection reliability for external Apple USB Modems when resuming an Internet connection after answering an incoming call.
* A computer restart is no longer needed to restart nfsd.
* Improves Apple File Sharing client performance by changing the default AFP WAN quantum size.. More...
* Windows File Sharing now generates only one process, avoiding an issue that could cause a Mac OS X computer to become unresponsive if it won a master browser election.
* Improves reliability when faxing in France or Belgium via an external Apple USB Modem.
Third-party
* Resolves an issue for Microsoft Word in which Word might stop responding when saving a file that uses certain OpenType fonts.
* Adds RAW image decoding support for these cameras: Sony DSLR-A100, Nikon D2Xs, Fuji FinePix S2 Pro, Fuji FinePix S3 Pro (+Highlights) and Konica Minolta 7.
* Resolves an issue in which thumbnails may appear blank when importing RAW images from a Canon 30D camera.
* Resolves an issue for Microsoft PowerPoint in which the display resolution might not change as expected after switching from a PowerPoint presentation to a different application via Command-Tab.
* Improves compatibility for Canon EOS Utility software after connecting a Canon EOS Kiss Digital camera to a PowerPC-based Mac.
* Improves compatibility for the TV Tracker 2 Dashboard widget.
Other
* Includes recent Apple security updates.
* Improves the accuracy of Rosetta numerics and addresses Altivec translation issues on Intel-based Macs.
* ColorSync matching no longer fails when using a V4 ICC profile in an application opened with Rosetta on an Intel-based Mac.
* Addresses an issue in which some USB devices connected to a PCI card may not be recognized after starting up or waking the computer.
* Resolves an issue in which external USB-based video cameras may not be available after quitting the application that is using it.
* Reduces time needed to transfer data from a USB-based image scanner.
* Improves responsiveness of the Translation Dashboard widget.
* Addresses an issue in which text typed with the Hangul input method may not be visible while the Caps Lock key is active, on PowerPC-based Macs.
* Adds support on Intel-based Macs for multiple cores to LAPACK and BLAS routines in the Accelerate framework; the maximum number of threads used by Accelerate BLAS routines is now limited by the environment variable VECLIB_MAXIMUM_THREADS; addresses an issue with some complex BLAS routines in the Accelerate framework that were encountering an illegal instruction. |

It looks like Mac OS X 10.4.8 didn't add support for any new cards, in analyzing the installed files (Driver is @ 1.1.1), the supported cards are:
- Novatel 730 (Cingular HSDPA)
- Novatel 740 (Cingular HDSPA)
- Sierra AirCard 580 (Verizon & Sprint)
- Sierra PC5220 (Verizon, discontinued)
- Novatel 620 (Verizon = V620 , Sprint = S620)
- Also support the Novatel V640
We were hoping that Apple would add support for the Merlin S720 (Our S720 PowerBook Hack is Available ) and possible a few other new products being announced next week _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I recently upgraded me PowerBook G4 from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8. Prior to the upgrade, when I had the Kyocera KPC650 installed in my PowerBook a PC card icon would appear in the menu bar (on the right side). This PC card icon had a drop down menu that let me power off the KPC650 before removing it. Since upgrading to 10.4.8, the PC card icon no longer appears when the KPC650 is installed. I can't find any method to power off the KPC650 before removing it. Now, if I remove the KPC650 (either when the computer is booted or if I put it to sleep), the PowerBook is "confused" and doesn't recognize the insertion of the KPC650 the next time I want to use it.
Without the ability to power down the PC card when the PowerBook is booted, my only safe choice is to completely shut down the PowerBook before removing the card.
Am I just missing something? Did 10.4.8 move the "management" of the PC card slot to a different location? Is there something I have to go turn on or toggle to get back the PC card icon in the menu bar?
Thanks!

You're not missing anything. The PCMCIA icon is gone as of OS 10.4.8.
Others have complained of system hangs, inability to wake when a KPC650 is inserted, or even kernel panics, requiring a restart. Not sure if all this is related to the version of VZAccess Manager (VZAM) used or 10.4.8 and the missing icon (many used that icon to turn off the card prior to ejecting), or if there are other hardware kernel extensions or applications that conflict (your OS 'environment' may have any number of added drivers or apps).
The VZAM driver is supposed to allow hot-swapping without 'turning off' the PCMCIA card.
Only Apple's driver (that provides native OS X support for the PC5220, Novatel 620, and Sierra Wireless AC580 EVDO cards) requires that you 'turn off' the PC Card prior to ejecting.
I would make sure that your VZAM software is the latest. For the KPC650 and G4 Powebooks, that is v2.3. That version used to allow interface-based update to v3.1.2, but VZW appears to have turned that off for some reason (see related info HERE).
I've used the KPC650 since July '05 on my Powerbook (edited plist to make work), and then with the first VZAM version 1.01 in August of '05. Used to get hangs on occasion unless I ejected the KPC650 when VZAM was still running.
I never have had consistent success sleeping/waking the Powerbook with the KPC650 inserted, nor does it work well to insert the KPC650 while a Powerbook is sleeping and then woken up.
If the KPC650 is inserted and the blue power LED is on, it is using power... so if you're on a battery its running the battery down, even if not connected on a data session. Answer: eject the card.
To use: normally I insert the card first, then run VZAM. Running VZAM first and then inserting works fine too. Click the Connect button to start data session.
To remove: while VZAM is running, Disconnected from a data session, simply eject card. Then quit VZAM. |
