This thread will discuss if the Novatel Merlin S720 EVDO Rev A Card is compatible with Kyocera KR1.

We are getting one in on Monday and we will test and report back then.

It is entirely possible that it will appear to work initially. If Novatel uses the same driver for this card as the S620 then it will probably load and connect. However, until it is added officially to the supported device list it will most likely not be stable. It's the same situation the PC5740 had, really. I'm trying to get one with the right PRL from Sprint to use it on the Rev. A network that went live in San Diego. Mmm...rev. A. Mr. Green

The version of VZAccess that comes with the s720 also drives the s620, so it could be the same drivers.

More on Monday...

After we activated a [url=http://www.evdoinfo.com/EVDO_Products/PC_Cards/Merlin_S720_EVDO_Rev_A_for_Sprint_20060824806/Merlin S720[/url] in our Windows XP Laptop, next we inserted it in a Kyocera KR1 running RK1006 firmware and it worked. We are still testing it, and will report more shortly.

Since, this is not yet officially supported by Kyocera, there still may be problems, but the initial tests, indicates that it may work just fine.

We are noticing a bunch of these entered in the KR1 Log:

Code:
Aug 28 09:48:15 (none) user.warn klogd: FCS error; flush

This may be an indication of a problem.

More later.

We are hoping the Kyocera will officially support this card quickly.

I have been keeping up with this page ready to pounce and purchase both S270 cards and k1s as soon as the go ahead comes. Just now I read on one of your other pages (blog) " Sprint reportedly has about 500 currently available, and we know they'll go fast!" So my question is would you recommend buying the card with the hope there will be support and returning within the time limit if it doesn't come about? We are, like everyone else, anxiously awaiting the freedom this will hopefully give us.

I'll wait to hear!

Thanks,

Barbara

Sprint has an upcoming Linksys router that officially support S720 so if Kyocera were smart, they'd ensure official KR1 support for S720 ASAP. Otherwise, you could get the card now and the Linksys later this year.

Might be tough to confirm KR1 works well until Rev A network upgrade is actually available.

Ok.. well chalk me up as an early adopter and am already running it. In fact running the S720 with a KR1 right now as I post this. I had only had my S620 up for about a week and was still under my 30 day guarantee. I called and they swapped with me for only the $50 extra.

It seems to be running well, although I am still in the midst of getting antennas and signal strength to my liking.

Edit: Oh and to answer Wally's question.. right now I have it hooked up with the * amp and the booster antenna (Arc Wireless). It is working well with all the same cables.

I can also confirm that the S720 has the exact same antenna connector as the S620, so ALL the amps, antennas, etc. will work with it. Very smart move Novatel. About the only difference is, the new cool black label and there is a flip up antenna.

Michael, do you happen to know what the rubber stopper is on the OTHER side of the S720? It at first looks like another antenna connector but is just a hole in the outer shell on my 720.

As for my antenna and signal strength issues.. I think I am just going to go all out and mount a yagi on the top of my 50' Rohn tower in my pasture, then cable 40' down the tower to a lightning arrestor, the amp, and then the KR1. I'll then hook my old 2.4Ghz omni to the external antenna connector (I think it is RP-SMA) and shoot it to my house to my Linksys WET54G which is then hard wired ethernet to my home network.

Its alot of work, but I'm getting max -95 db where I am now even though I am mounted pretty high on the house. My Rohn tower will get me tons of extra height and almost a direct line of site to Sprints tower 3.4 miles away.

Michael, does your comment above (about the antennas) refer to just them, or is there an implication there that this car will indeed work with the Kyocera 1?

It sound like both you and getut are saying that!

I'm ready to buy it, but............

When the s720 is connected with the KR1 is there a change in the up/down speed? How is the testing going, do you have a comparison/reqimendation to the Linksys yet?

I'm with Barbara

Is anything yet known about the Kyocera and the Sprint card? I'm feeling like I missed something, but it doesn't look like it here. I'm ready to buy two cards and two modems, but............will they work?

Sorry to be bothersome, but but but.......

I just received the KR1 and set it up to use with my S720. I was getting an average of 1500 up / 100 down with the S720 plugged directly into my notebook. I'm in the dallas area. In the KR1, I'm only getting 380/60, both cabled and wireless, with and without WPA enabled. I took the card out and plugged it back into the notebook and speeds went back up.

Any suggestions as to settings I might change on the KR1 to speed things up?
1- Right now, I'm using WPA encryption, but I got the same slow speeds with the router wide open.

2- I'm not broadcasting the SSID, but that couldn't make any difference, could it?

3- I tried using MAC address filtering, but the cabled computer got locked out! Do ethernet cards have MAC addresses?

4- I do see tons of messages (like Michael posted above) in the system log, like this: Sep 27 14:08:45 (none) user.warn klogd: FCS error; flush. Could this be causing the slowdown?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Bill

edit: Booster-Antenna tech support just replied to my question on the subject as follows:
Quote:
While the Merlin S720 works in the KR1, it is not yet officially supported. We understand that Kyocera is aware of the slowdown issue and we hope to see an update to restore normal functionality, though they have not indicated a time frame when this will happen.
