I agree this would be optimal and would sell many many more units in the end.

I tend to agree that using the USB port for Print Sharing is more useful than tethering a phone. Perhaps, if it is a decision based on cost, they can leave 1 USB port and have a setting in the web interface to select Phone or Print Share. I would think that MANY more people would want to use Print Sharing too.

Been reading about this device (as well as tips on getting my KPC650 to work *well* in linux) and it looks interesting.
2 questions.
1) What OS is it running? Is it proprietary or stripped down version of linux/bsd?
2) Will it be able to update the PRL?

btw thank you for fixing my account Mike.

I am not sure what OS it is running. I will try to find out. I know there is a web interface to update the firmware. If it is Linux/BSD, that will REALLY open up the doors for people to hacking or/changing the functionality. Heck, we can even upload the StompBox OS to the KR1 and we have a REAL cool StompBox.

Most EVDO cards have 2 channels for communicating. One is as a fast modem and the 2nd channel is to get signal strength, update PRL, etc. It looks like the KR1 is only using the communicating channel, so there wouldn't be a way to get Signal Strength, See network (EVDO vs. 1xRTT), or activate the card/update PRL (you still need a supported laptop for that.

I was also interested to see if it would be able to be powered over USB. I doubt that i will be able to though. A standard PC USB port provides +5v at 500mA. Thats not 3.0A. I would still like to see it tested though. It wouldnt plug into the usb port. You would need to get a USB cable, strip one side of it, and connect the other end to the same plug type as the router. Not hard to do. When you cut open a usb cable, there are four wires: +5v, Ground, Data+, and Data-. Red is +5v, black is ground. Give it a shot and see if it boots up Smile I would really like to avoid an inverter if possible while in the car. If not, ill be searching for a cheap DC-DC solution for that output.

Also mike,
If you could read off the power input on the acctual router itself, that would be very helpful. There is ussualy a power input range printed somewhere close to the power port. Im trying to find a DC-DC regulator from 12v to 5v 3A at the moment but that is an uncommon amperage for 5v. If it has a wider range, closer to 2A or 5A, I have a few ideas on a very cheap converter. Pluging the power brick into a DC-AC converter that is pluged into your 12v source would be INCREDIBLY wastful in power, let alone the WATTS and WATTS of heat that would be given off Smile An 8v step down is even more efficient than the power brick it comes with.

The back of mine says "5V---....3A and (-) (0) (+)" where the --- and the ... are above/below respectively.

If you are looking for a POE solution, the wappoe from linksys might fit the bill:
http://www1.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=36&scid=47&prid=582
It puts out 5v @ at least 2A, maybe more. So if we can verify the amperage, and the size of the plug, it might work.

As many of us are awaiting the sale of Kyocera KR1 router, I noticed a press release for Kyocera Wireless was from NEW ORLEANS. Anybody know if that is where they are headquartered?

They are located in San Diego.

They announced the KR1 at the CTIA Wireless Show, which was held in New Orleans.

Dam, what is the hold up with Kyocera launching this device to the general public or only the carriers going to sell the router? The wait is killing me already. LOL!

[quote="Michael"]A few answers....
"When you plug in a card, it automatically connects

It doesn't disconnect when idle, but does go dormant (just like when you put it in your laptop)

You CAN connect / disconnect from the web interface."

I don't understand what to "go dormant (just like when you put it in your laptop) means.

We use the PC5220 in our G4 Powerbook. We get disconnected if the connection is idle for a period of time.

I take it the EVDO providers would not want connection to be always on.
Is going dormant someway of being connected but not using bandwidth?

Yes, dormant mode more or less, keeps the tower less busy and able to handle more traffic per tower.

Regarding your Mac Disconnecting, this tip would fix it:

This Just in.....

There may be a 2nd USB port on the final production unit of the KR1 which would support sharing a USB Printer.

Kyocera is trying to get the software to support a USB Printer.

As we get more information, we post it here...
