Tidbit: I recall reading a David Pogue article that covered EVDO. He mentioned the Kyocera KPC650 and possibly the PC Mag review. He wrote that the antenna design of the KPC650 was superior, thus it was the card to get. Ironically, in the same article he mentioned that the other cards tested had higher throughput than the KPC650 in some situations.

No surprise. Its wireless afterall.

That said, the antenna design of the KPC650 must be pretty efficient if the numbers in Michael's posts regarding SAR indicate that the Kyocera has a lower output than other cards: http://www.evdoforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=584
It has the lowest SAR level... don't know it that correlates or not. Sheesh, the Treo has a brain-frying 1.5 SAR level... glad I use a headset with mine.

Probably the only way to examine the differences is to get three or four different cards and run side to side tests in the environments you intend to use the card. On one hand you have signal sensitivity and efficiency... how does it work as a radio, on the other hand the hardware and software that handles the networking and data. That is, how good of a modem is it and how good are the drivers.

The good side of testing this with a router like the KR1 is that your user platform is static. Plug all these cards into all the various notebooks out there and your tests may be all over the place due to the platform difference and their state. At least with the KR1 you've eliminated that randomness.

While I was waiting and disappointed about something still not available. I searched hard on google and found a solution -- 3G Phoebus. The 3G Phoebus was available for for several month already to my surprise.

I bought one for $399. I am extremely happy with the product and its feature and performance ! The Pyramid design is really cool and is a conversation piece when my friends see it. It's true plug-and-play, very easy to use. I open the box, plug in my EVDO card and power, I am on line within a minute !

It would be nice to see a complete review of this product here. I would recommend it for those like me sick of waiting.

Sorry , I will wait for the Kyocera unit. This posting is obviously a shameless plug. To well written had to come from a marketing dept. The wait is almost over and the $399 price tag for the above units a little rich for me. The Kyocera and Dlink names are trusted names in EVDO and WiFi . Unless these people got together with Michael and let him run this unit through his testing I would not have much faith in their so called claims
I just noticed something else look at the username of the person making this post EVDOWLAN - Break it apart . Obvious what you are involved in . Be honest in here and let Michael revue your products and if they are good he will be happy to give you a thumbs up but he is not going to endorse your products here and let you use this forum to push your wares if he does not feel your product is up to the standards that have been set here .Or we will just become a Robert Kim like site , hawking overpriced crap for the sake of a quick buck.

3G's website is CRAP. Pretty sad for a technology company. Anyway..
It looks like 3G is putting out a line of mobile router solutions. I personally would rather spend the Rediculious $400 on parts to build my own stompbox before giving it to some UK company for something that is promised at $200 in the next week. Im sure the KR1 is a much better product too. (from looking at 3g's product info)

I had to reach for a "high velocity content capture device" after reading that line. Embarassed

Lemme guess that all those high dollar EVDO routers will drastically drop in price when the KR1 ships. Pricedrop on isle 9! </gravy train>

Question for all the KR1 testers: Have any of you tried the KR1 with a GSM GPRS/EDGE card? (yeah... yeah.. I know... this IS EVDO forums and all...) Any idea if the KR1 will recognize HSPDA cards?

The KR1 is listed as available for ordering now on the Kyocera accessories store web site, http://store.kyocera-wireless.com/product_detail.aspx?productID=4647

In the last few minutes it has been listed as on backorder.

The Kyocera site has stopped accepting orders for the KR1 and it is now listed as "Coming Soon" again.

I did receive an e-mail confirmation of my order. Perhaps I just hit the site at the time they were doing some testing.

When I met Rigo (project manager for Kyocera)at CES he informed me it will work with the Cingular cards and network .

Sorry, I didn't list the price earlier.

The price was listed at $299.99, plus tax and shipping, of course.

It was listed as Available to be added to the cart, then by the time I registered on the site, it was listed as on Backorder but still could be added to the cart, and within about 30 minutes it was back to "Coming Soon".

The site accepted my order and I received an e-mail confirmation.

So, I guess I just wait and see what happens.

Not so much, no. There are plans to support GSM/W-CDMA based data services in the future but this initial product launch will not include that capability. And Rigo isn't a project manager, but that doesn't matter. Smile

At the initial launch, the quantities available are rather low. More will follow up but won't be available immediately. I'm not sure how PSEVDOU got in but we'll just call him lucky. I don't think it has officially been made available but I'm sure that order will be honored. It should be in the next day or two, though.

I was told by Michael he was the guy , I guess not , I guess he was mistaken about the Cingular thing as well . Nice guy though

I ordered mine for $255 after the 15% discount for first time orders yesterday around noon. They did call me back and say it was backordered but should ship in about a week.
