| Just met the people from Linksys. The release of thier EVDO router in North America is not even in the planning stages. Basically I was told They do not see the demand here that there was in Europe for the product. So basically kids it seems like all our hopes and dreams rest with the Kyocera / DLiank KR1 |

As I stated before if you read th thread the release date is February 1 . Rigo from Kyocera also told me the unit is only being released by Kyocera there will be no Dlink branded version . The current unit says powered by Dlink on it and is branded Kyocera |

Has anyone discovered which pc-card produces the best performance with this device? (the Kyocera?) is there anything that can be done to improve the performance of the solution like the tweeks I have read about for an installation in a workstation? _________________ -morpheus- |

It says powered by D-Link, because Kyocera contracted D-Link to write half the firmware (the router side), they wrote the other 1/2 that deals with communicating with the cards & the communications side of things.
Regarding which card produces the best results, you are going to have to wait for the thing to ship and others to post their comments. I believe that cards that work best in PCs will work best in the KR1 too (e.g. Kyocera KR1). Lots of factors, on where you are going to be locating the KR1, do you need an external antenna (e.g. putting the router in a truck/limo, it may be good to have a magnetic mount). The tweaks mentioned here are not going to apply, since they are in the OS, and not in the card - no way to apply them - however - there are a ton of Performance settings for the KR1 (see below):

I see, so we don't know which EVDO modem provides the best performance "out-of-the-box"? I am a bit surprised that we don't know this ... well I guess that I am assuming the one that performs the best out of the box will perform the best when used with the router.
Are there any performance benchmarks for the evdo modems without the tweeks? also, your picture looks like the WiFi configuration for the router. _________________ -morpheus- |

| because what is "best" all depends on your setup. an older card with a magnetic antenna may run better in a mobile setup than a new one with an antenna. A newer card may run better in a stationary high signal environment. It will be more dependent on the locale than the router as the router just dials out. (the tweak settings are all after effects) |

Thanks SpillMonkey - Michael. I was hoping we had a baseline of data collected in a controlled environment that we could apply to the router.
Fresh XP build, newly patched but standard configuration "right out of the box." Plug in the card, run our speed tests and record what we fine. Setup the router with the latest binary and run the same battery of tests and access the results. Could be interesting ... wish I had the hardware and 3/4 of a day. Would be a fun project ... _________________ -morpheus- |

| The PCMag review of the KPC650 seems to indicate they did this sort of controlled testing, but strangely they don't list full results, just some of the numbers in the article. Seems that their findings pointed toward the KPC650 as being the king of the hill, but as stated by others, there are just so many potential variables it’s near impossible to pick a ‘best’ card. |

The review in PCMagazine was based on data gathered by an independent third party test house called Quality Partners. They tested our card and two or three others in the same environment to benchmark performance.
The PCMag folks also did OTA testing in New York and found better performance with the KPC650 in low signal areas. Mike will tell you the same thing. |
