PCMagazine also did a blurb about it under the notes about Strobe:

From the pcmag article"

"But Kyocera spokesman John Chier said the company is "within weeks" of coming to an agreement with a carrier so that Kyocera could sell their under-$250 router early this year."

Coming to an agreement with a carrier? What the heck? Why do they need their permission?

$300!!!!!!! That's absurd. I thought initially it was supposed to be under $200. I guess they realized the high demand and it's still priced significantly lower than that junk(xion)box. I guess that's capitalism for ya.

Any other reasons for the change of heart at Kyocera?

"coming to an agreement with a carrier" is techno-speak for "Our product doesn't actually work and we are stalling for time". Come on folks, surely you don't forget or ignore all the false hype statements made by kyocera regarding this thing over the past TWO years already.

Two years? Huh? They originally showed it last March at CTIA, so we are at 9-10 months ago. There was no sightings of it, until 3-4 months ago. That is hardly 2 years.

Part of the problem, may have been this site. We received a KR1 for testing and didn't sign a NDA and we were given permission to talk about it on our forums. Any time we got info, we posted it (at least most of it). Almost all of the information, wasn't probably for public consumption. However, it was posted here for all to read. I have learned a lot about this router and Kyocera as well. They are more interested in releasing a product that is solid and doesn't require a firmware upgrade in a few months.

Now, for those willing to bet if this product will ever be released, I will gladly take that bet (FYI, if you are going to MacWorld, stop by booth 107, we will have one on display, in fact, we *may* be doing live streaming from the booth).

"Agreement with carrier" means that the carrier approves the product for use on their network and in some cases sells it themselves. Common sense dictates that you at least talk to the carrier on which you plan to use the product.

I just updated my V620 card drivers thanks to Michael. How am I going to update my V620 drivers once I have the Kyocera KR1? Will Kyocera gather all the drivers for all the cards that the KR1 supports, package it up in a firmware update, weekly? Will they have firmware updates based on what card you have installed in the KR1?
I for one, am very much looking forward to owning a KR1.

Cheers

At this point, you still need to activate/update the PRLs of the card on a supported OS before you use it in the KR1. You will also need to use a supported OS (Mac/Win, depending on card and carrier) to perform any PRL updates in the future.

After the KR1 ships, we will have an option to "pre-activate" any EVDO Card, so that you get the card already activated and ready to use with the KR1. So, if you have a computer without a PC Slot, you will be able to use everything "out of the box".

Currently Here are the supported OS's if you computer has a PC Slot:

Sprint:
Merlin S620 Win
AirCard 680 Win
PC5740 Win

Verizon
Kyocera KPC650 Win/Mac
Merlin V620 Win
AirCard 680 Win
PC5740 Win
PC5220 Win/Mac (edited - added after post)

Since, this thread is getting so HUGE, lets break off and having different threads based on the topic. Please keep this thread as the place to post your predictions, general discussion, never believing it will ship. New specific topics should be created on general use (probably more will show up after the KR1 ships). Here is a new KR1 specific topic:

KR1 and Dynamic DNS (DDNS)

All the Engineering bugs I have reported have been corrected and accepted. I don't have any "inside" news, but I would imagine they are very, very close to launch...

I would agree with your assessment on being soon, I received the "launch firmware" yesterday, and it is looking great.

This just in...

KR1 ramp up begins...

Not sure how long production, shipping, packing, etc. take, but I would imagine end of month is a pretty good target date. I am sure we will here officially from Kyocera at some point soon!

Well - Just met with RIGO from D-LINK . KR1 is a CES award winner . The release date is February 1 2006.
Just in case anyone is interested I met with Product Managers from Netgear and Belkin. Belkin has no Plans for any such device. Netgear is in the planning stages. He actual showed me a non working box.
