Does anyone have any current information on when the Kyocera KR1 Router might be available?

The original Kyocera press release announcing the product was on 3/14/05. This seems like a very long lead time for announcing a product, but that press release listed availability as Fall 2005 and also mentioned availability to carriers rather than consumers.

Will this thing work with a Destop too?

Any Idea on cost?

Gah I love this forum!

Well, since the Kyocera KR1 Router shares your EVDO over WiFi, if your Desktop has WiFi, your Desktop can also use it. If your desktop does not have WiFi, you can plug it in one of the ethernet ports built-into the router (yes, it is a hub too).

There were other articles and web sites that quoted in the $200 price range for this.

I am really anxious to buy the Kyocera KR1 router to use to connect systems without PC card slots to Sprint’s EVDO.

From a support perspective, it probably makes sense to get the Kyocera KPC650 card to use in the router rather than the Novatel or Sierra card.

Sprint doesn’t currently offer the KPC650, but there have been rumors that Sprint will make the KPC650 card available. Does anyone have any information on when that might be?

There is also some indication that the Kyocera KR1 router will only be available from the carriers. Does anyone have any information on whether this is true and is there any information on when the router might be available?
Thanks

Sprint should be approving the KPC650 any day now. It has been approved, but not yet announced.

Hello,

We will be posting some additional information this week on the KR1 Router. We got a Pre-Production model to play with today and it is SWEET! Very simple and elegant. The unit looks nice. Works with iBooks and PowerBook 12 inch (yeah, first time these models can indirectly/inexpensively use EVDO). See picture below of the KR1 Router and a iBook G4.

Again, we will be posting a TON more information this week on the Kyocera KR1. We plugged it in and it comes pre-configured and ready to use. The Access Point is named "KR1".

The only interesting tidbit, the "Powered By D-Link" logo on the front of the unit. Apparently, D-Link and Kyocera are both working on this router (Kyocera calls it the KR1 & D-Link calls it the DI-725).

We will be doing the following this week:

- writing a full review
- testing Verizon PC5220, V620, KPC650, AC580, PC5740
- testing with Sprint S620 & AC580
- taking a lot more screen shots
- showing you the powerful built-in software that comes with it

Here are some pictures:

I will be benchmarking on both Ethernet and WiFi, also benchmarking EVDO card directly in laptop for comparison.

Initial testing to see if Verizon cards get power and signal:

Kyocera KPC650 = power light and signal

Novatel V620 = power light and signal

PC5220 = power light and signal

AirCard 580 = power light and signal

PC5740 = no power

We will do more testing later in the week with the different cards - the rumors by the competitors of the KR1 of it only working with the Kyocera KPC650 are completely false. We will be posting little tidbits on the thread and when the review is complete, we will be posting it at:

Here are more tidbits.

No performance loss when using KR1 or direct PC Card.

Here is a cool use.

If you get good signal near a window, but degrades in other parts, put a KR1 near the window, access via WiFi, signal problem solved!

POE = No (needs to be plugged in)
USB = unknown, I will test (I doubt it, power needs to be plugged in)
Production = unknown
