I went into an Alltel store today to purchase a Passport card for my laptop. I'm new at this but have done lots of reading on this site in my research. I'm in Jonesboro, AR as is the store I went into. The Rep informed me that Alltel is changing ALL of their 1x into EVDO nationwide and that it should be completed by sometime in October of this year. Jonesboro is already being tested by them and is an EVDO area for now. He also told me that Verizon will be doing the same thing to their 1x areas. Does anyone know anything about this? I was really surprised by it.
Also, I understand that Alltel has a contract with Sprint to use their EVDO areas. So what happens while traveling whenI hit a Sprint area? Will I roam or will it be okay? The Rep told me there would be absolutely no roaming on my plan because I have a Total Freedom plan. |

Hopefully Alltel first adds EVDO to areas Sprint does not have it as by early next year or sooner they'll be roaming to each other.
Sprint has announced very specific plans to rollout EVDO to nearly 100% of network by end of next year but Verizon has not officially stated anything yet about rolling out to near 100% of network. |

| Which card do you think is the best? I've ordered the Passport but the store is having a hard time getting one in. How do you feel about the 5740? |

| As I have said before . Keep your eyes on Alltel . They are making all sorts of moves . There are still buying up regional carriers and negotiating to buy another major cellular carrier that will give them the national presence they want . Company has some really good people running it and are definitley going to be a force to be reckoned with |

| Thanks! I will. The manager of the Alltel store tried to argue with me and get me to take the 5740 anyway... Hopefully, the Passport will be here tomorrow. |

Agreed--hold out for the Passport. Kyocera's in a bind and can't make 'em fast enough.
Make sure to update your PRL next month, too, and get v.4.3.7 of the QuickLink dialer software. Alltel's currently rolling out a new PRL for voice (to accomodate the Sprint agreement), but won't be activating it for data for another month or so. |

I think that sales rep was exaggerating a bit on EvDO completion. They'll be in over 40 markets by the end of 1/07, but the whole network won't be upgraded until sometime later in '07. The Sprint roaming agreement will help that happen faster.
Make sure you get the Promotional Unlimited Data Roaming plan (about $60) to be sure you don't get charged for roaming! |
