Does anyone know what is the likelihood of causing damage (and what sort of damage) by inserting/removing the EVDO card with the power on? There is a warning sticker about this on my KR1, and the previous owner might have done it.

I would never expect the router to continue functioning after the card is removed/reinserted. I would always turn the router off first. I’m just wondering if it’s possible to permanently damage the hardware. I imagine not, but that may not be a safe assumption. Perhaps Mackieman will weigh in here.

Since my KR1 works fine indefinitely (as long as the WiFi is disabled!) I guess there is no hardware damage with the EVDO card interface, even if the previous owned had hot-swapped it.

From a hardware standpoint there is no damage that will be done by removing the PC Card while the router is powered on. This process is the same reguardless of the power status of the device. Scott is correct in that the issue is found in software wherein the USB driver is not intelligent enough to sense when a device has been removed and recover. The result is that the kernel dumps and the router locks up. A quick powercycle can recover that.
