...and the peasants rejoice.
RK1006 was approved for release to the public today. I don't have a link quite yet as it hasn't been uploaded and the website updated but that should come later today. This includes fixes for the following, among other things:
UTStarCom PC5740 - This card is working a lot better now. I still see odd things in the log once in a while but I left the card going in a KR1 for over 12 hours and had a laptop continuously pinging Google.Com. After more than 42,000 pings, there was less than 1% packetloss overall. This means that the issue of it disconnecting and the status light going red which lead to a reboot of the router is all but gone. As with any card (including the KPC650) dealing with RF, your mileage may vary.
WAN LED - The WAN LED now blinks when there is traffic passing over that interface. This is how KR1 was specified to work originally and is in line with how other D-Link products operate.
There were a couple of other things that were fixed including a fix for certain Ethernet chipsets under Windows2000 where the GUI would not come back up after your reboot the router (changing a WiFi setting, etc).
Also, the Kyocera KX18 (Known as Jet and sold by Amp'd Mobile) and the Audiovox CDM-8940 are temporarily being moved off the supported device list. Fixing the PC5740 seems to have had some side effect that affected performance of those devices. I'm not thinking this is a huge issue because neither of those phones are sold by carriers who support tethered data on them. Fixes for those two and some new phones from Sprint are in the works right now for a future update. Sprint has started to offer more tethered data options so we'll update that list when firmware is available.
Also also, we've seen some better WiFi performance in some test environments. We've seen reports here and there that WiFi connections were dropping and other odd things were happening. Rarely we were able to trash our RF environment and see some of that; it seems to have gotten a little better with RK1006. Give it a shot but your mileage may vary.
So hopefully this is the last firmware release that has bug fixes. If you run into an issue, please search the forum for existing threads so we don't get 72 threads saying, "ZOMG X DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE!!!1!1eleven" like we did with VPN. We thank you.

Could you elaborate a little more on Sprint phone support? Will any phone work yet on latest firmware? Can you specify which models are planned for future support?
thx in advance |

It has been my experience that any of the Samsung phones will load because Samsung uses the same PID for each of it's USB-enabled phones (against USB spec). The issue is how these phones operate during longterm use. Each of the phones I tried would load but had issues staying connected. This is because each of them needs to be tweaked in the router firmware to work well on Sprint's network, much like what had to be done on the PC5740. I'm not going to publish an exact list until we verify that each of the phones works for sure. Suffice it to say they are all currently offered EVDO phones from Sprint that support tethering.

Quick question, are any new features there, like seeing card signal strength in the web admin area? |
Yeah, the folks who maintain the Kyocera Wireless website are working on getting the file uploaded and a link ready for it. I'll post it as soon as it's ready.
And yes, I forgot to note that in my first post. There is a signal strength meter available in the GUI on the status page. It's a little thing we designed that measures initial RSSI and takes that value along with the number and reliability of packets passed over the WAN interface to calculate the value displayed. So in a sense it's not a 100% true RSSI value at all times but I have found it to be quite good at giving you a basic idea of how good or bad your signal is. It updates every 30 seconds. |

| Until RK1006 is publicly available and we all have a chance to try it, we won't know. There are many different VPN clients and configurations, so it may take a little time before we've heard success/failure reports. More than likely the more common clients from Cisco/Linksys, Netopia, NetScreen, etc. will be reported on first. |

Mackieman, as one of the 'peasants', let me say: THANKS! :]
One thing you all will be glad to see:
So far the KR1 with my S620 locked to 1xRTT-only has stayed up all night through lots of testing. On the other KR1 here with old RK1002 firmware, I get continual connection drops when locked to 1xRTT.
With RK1006... no amber, red, or missing Status LED, and no hangs. BRAVO! |

| My initial, after a few hours use, impressions are that the connection is indeed now stable using a pc5470, but I still have barely dial-up level bandwidth. The signal strength is poor, only 4 bars out of 10, so that is probably the cause, and is, I'm guessing, more likely due to the card and signal strength it can receive in my concrete building. The 3g I ordered should arrive tomorrrow so I'll be able to do a head to head comparison and hopefully figure out which variable is crimping my bandwidth. But I've been able to use my torrent app without losing the connection for a couple hours now, whereas before the upgrade it would cause a drop within five minutes guaranteed, so it's definitely a genuine upgrade. Well done. |

| I'm glad it's working out for everyone. I know there was a lot of folks who were hard up for the 5740 fix and some of the other issues this build addresses but I hope now you guys understand the need to ensure that the quality was as good as could be. Anyway, thanks for the support. |

just an FYI - when I did the firmware update, I had no problems at all. The router rebooted on its own and everything works fine.
the signal meter is a nice touch. I found that where I thought I had a good signal I don't and where I wouldn't expect to hace the best signal, I did. |

| Thanks TZ1. All of you KR1 updaters may find it very helpful to pull down the zipped version from D-Links FTP site ^ to avoid any issues with file corruption (or pages full of text in Safari, etc.). |
