We have found the MB6000 to work with VPN without problems.
We have found the KR1 with RK1006 still has problems with many flavors of VPN.
Check your email, our PDF for upgrading your KR1 was emailed to you. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

We like them both, but w/kr1 we have problems sending lots of video or downloading anything large we lose connection with our service provider. No problem getting signal, as we have an external atenna for our evdo card that works great. Plenty of bars. We do not have this problem with the mb8000. The only problem we have with the mb8000 other than the cost, is that we do not know if we can add a wifi high gain signal booster like the hawking signal boster we use to get over 2miles out of our kr1. Is there polarity issues that we need to be concerned with when adding the hawking signal booster to the mb8000?

No. Polarity in this case pertains to a physical description for the type of RF connector TopGlobal chose for the MB8000. Unfortunately its a confusing 'industry-standard' way to describe that a connector's center feed uses the opposite type of mating surface, pin vs. sleeve or sleeve vs. pin. This isn't about electronic polarity.
While most Wi-Fi devices use either reverse-polarity TNC or SMA connectors for their antennas, Top Global chose a (non industry-standard) standard SMA connector for their Wi-Fi antenna on the MB8000. Electronically, the shield is a shield and the center pin is the feed.
Either get an adapter to go from standard SMA to reverse polarity SMA or change out the µFL-to-SMA pigtail connector to a µFL-to-RP-SMA connector.
Also worth noting, the TopGlobal MB8000 uses a mini-PCI Wi-Fi card with both AUX and MAIN µFL connectors (just like the KR1), yet unlike the KR1, the MB8000's external Wi-Fi antenna connects to 'MAIN' and the AUX is not attached. |

Thanks Scott,
Does that mean that when I hook up an external antenna with or with out the booster to the mb8000 it will not be as effective as the kr1 since as you mentioned the "....external Wi-Fi antenna connects to 'MAIN' and the AUX is not attached."
thanks

The KR1 is setup for diversity, so that's both MAIN and AUX are attached.
If you can manage to find a more powerful antenna with standard SMA connector for the MB8000 it will work fine connected to the MAIN only.
One trick on the KR1 is to swap the MAIN/AUX relationship for certain Wi-Fi setups. In fact we have some KR1 users that only use the MAIN Wi-Fi card connection, leaving AUX unattached. |

|

We appear to have hit a snag with the Top Global MB8000 and its apparent lack of support for Alltel's Kyocera KPC650 Passport EVDO card.
While the Verizon KPC650 works quite well with the TGMB8000, that isn't the case with the Alltel KPC650 variant. Some have speculated that since the connection authentication methodology differs between Verizon and Alltel, perhaps Top Global's Alltel configuration/initialization fails to take this into account: http://www.evdoforums.com/thread3696.html
We do see that Top Global USA's website indicates support for the Alltel KPC650 EVDO card, noted on their supported device list here.
Unfortunately one of our customers has been through two MB8000's and neither would allow connection with the Alltel/Kyocera KPC650 when the very same Alltel cards work fine in routers made by other manufacturers.
In fact, our customer has direct contact with Alltel and they showed him many different routers accept for Top Global's MB8000 MobileBridge. He was hoping that the MB8000 would be a solution that he could not only use but also share with contacts at Alltel. Too bad such a fine router mysteriously doesn't work with an EVDO card/carrier that's listed as supported. |

Thanks to our patient tech-savvy customer and lot's of e-mails between him and our tech and Top Global's techs, the Top Global MB8000 MobileBridge is now working with the Alltel KPC650. Yay!
This requires updating to the latest firmware and specific manual configuration on the new firmware's PPP page (the MB8000 will not detect carrier type and auto-config).
Note that the MB8000 MobileBridge does not have a browser-based firmware update page. Instead, the user must install or configure a TFTP server to get the firmware uploaded. Pretty simple really, but tech phobics are forwarned. |
