|
|
The 10.4.7 Update released today finally includes native support for both sprint and verizon EVDO cards. Here's what the release notes say...
| Quote: | | Adds support for Sierra wireless cards AirCard 580 (AC580), PC5220, and for the Novatel V620, S620, and U730 wireless cards for PowerBook computers. |
I just installed the update on my Powerbook with Sprint S620 card, and it shows the card's signal strength and 1X/EVDO network status. When you hold down the option key and click on the menu, you can activate the card and do a few other things (which i'm not sure what they do).

This is great news. We have heard about this being in the works for a long time.
We will be be testing it with all cards, including the new Novatel XV620 ExpressCard and will have more to say shortly _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| About time. I was stunned when I saw the new menu. Anyone know if the PRL files get updated automatically? |

Yes. Yes! YES!
Just did the update and now my Powerbook 17 1.83 shows the 4 bars and all the goodies. And it works.
Don't forget to uncheck the Show Modem on menu bar since the new menu item does that work for you.
For a while I am happy. |

We are doing testing now.
Initial reports indicate compatibility with:
Verizon V620
Verizon PC5220 (new and old Firmware)
Verizon AirCard 580
Sprint S620
Sprint AirCard 580
Support is NOT in there for:
Verizon PC5740 (not needed, since Mac software already available for this)
Sprint PC5740
Kyocera KPC650 (not needed, since Mac software already available for this)
Looks like support is there for Cingular U730 (unconfirmed), but support is in there.
We are working on a full write up to appear on EVDOinfo.com
This is GOOD news for Mac users, now we have Apple providing the support for EVDO cards.
Tomorrow we will test to see if a brand new "locked" card from Sprint is supported, or if it can be "unlocked" by the Mac. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

* The Mail POP account option to "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message..." is no longer turned off after performing a sync with .Mac.
* POP accounts you create will no longer begin with the "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message..." preference setting turned off.
* Redirecting message to only a BCC: address no longer redirects the message to the original To: recipients as well.
* Improves results when retrieving IMAP messages with attachments over unreliable connections.

* If a conference doesn't start as expected, iChat will now offer to send a report to Apple for investigation.
Syncing
* Improves support for Motorola cell phones that sync via iSync and Bluetooth
* Addresses issues that could cause iDisk syncing to fail without alerting you or with a "Last sync failed" alert.
* iDisk syncs in progress are now more responsive to cancel requests.
* Shortens the time for cancellation of an iPod contact-and-calendar sync, if cancellation requested shortly after sync.
* Improves certain .Mac connection failure alerts that included misleading error messages.
* Resolves an issue in which the initial .Mac sync would fail if all data classes were selected to be synced (but future syncs would succeed).
* Addresses a number of issues related to .Mac syncing of tasks, bookmarks, and contacts.
* Addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.4.6 in which you might not be able to sync via iSync 2.2 with Sony Ericsson k700i or S700i phones.
Finder and Apple applications
* Manually removing unwanted fonts from /System/Library/Fonts/ will no longer potentially cause Finder to unexpectedly quit.
* TextEdit will no longer unexpectedly quit if Helvetica fonts have been disabled in Font Book.
* You can now create compressed disk images larger than 60 GB.
* In iCal, a "Print Error while printing" alert message will no longer appear when creating a PDF with one of these options: Compress PDF, Encrypt PDF, Mail PDF, Save As PDF-X, Save PDF to iPhoto, or Save PDF to Web Receipts.
* Addresses issues that might prevent Sudden Motion Sensor information from appearing in System Profiler or other utilities.

* Prevents certain Adobe and Quark applications from unexpectedly quitting when saving a file to a non-Apple AFP server.
Networking and Xsan
* Addresses an issue that could cause files to be deleted when duplicating them in the Finder on a mounted AFP volume.
* Addresses an issue that could cause the error "Bad file descriptor" when using the cp command to copy a file to an AFP volume.
* Mac OS X 10.4 computers now respond to Layer 2 Multicast ARPs.
* Addresses an issue in which the configd process could take excessive CPU resources when a DHCP server sent a malformed DHCP response.
* The included Apple VPN client now supports group membership on Cisco VPN servers.
* Improves reliability of the lsof command on systems with a large amount of RAM installed.
* Resolves an issue that could cause Xsan clients to stop responding when accessing the SAN if an Xsan peer was rebooted.

* Resolves an issue using "Save As..." from certain Adobe applications to an Xsan volume reshared via AFP.
* The cp, mv and tar commands now pre-allocate space on Xsan volumes to avoid file fragmentation.
* Safari will no longer intermittently, unexpectedly quit if you use PAC (Proxy Auto Configuration) files.
* Addresses an issue in which Apple Remote Desktop clients could stop updating the admin's control screen.

* Resolves an issue for Mac OS X 10.4.6 and PowerPC-based Macs in which some applications may silently fail to open, or you could see "error: can't fragload" when trying to open an application.
* Addresses an issue in which HTML files on a downloaded disk image might not be readable, and a "Safari cant find the file. No file exists at the address /private/tmp/..." alert appears, after Safari mounts the downloaded image.
* Resolves an issue that prevented users with Active Directory accounts from logging in if "Use UNC path from Active Directory" was enabled.
* Resolves an issue in which Intel-based Macs could not bind to Active Directory when multiple domain controllers are available.

After getting a PCI to PC card converter working on my G5 Powermac I tested out the native Mac support for the Sprint Merlin S620 card. Worked great!
Then I installed the VZAccess Manager to test the Kyocera KPC650 since the OS 10.4.7 update does not support the KPC650. Worked great in the converter slot too!
But...
Verizon's VZAccess Manager v2.3 broke the new OS 10.4.7 update's native OS X support for the Sprint Merlin S620. The card wasn't detected after insertion, nor would it connect. There were a few redundant devices or 'ports' now listed in the Network>Network Port Configurations list as well.
I used the 'Uninstall VZAccess Manager' under the main VZAccess Manager menu to uninstall the app, the modem script and the drivers.
After rebooting the Sprint Merlin S620 was inserted and it was detected normally.
I still had a couple of redundant Novatel Wireless Merlin CDMA devices listed in the ports list, though neither had dialing configuration info. I deleted them.
For now it appears you cannot use the newest VZAccess Manager on a system where you want to use a Sprint Merlin S620 with native support. Its one or the other.
Not sure if a Mac that was previously loaded with VZAccess Manager would detect the Merlin card after doing the 10.4.7 update or not. We'll have to test that. |

Is it best to remove the drivers that I installed? Performance is less than stellar in areas where it should be great, but no signal strength meter.
Any links, ideas, suggestions? I am very pleased with the card, but Iknow it has to be capable of more. Ordered the antenna which is on the way...
Thanks! |

I'm a complete novice with EVDO. I just picked up a Sprint/Novatel S620 at the local Sprint store. I'm running OS X 10.4.7 on a G4 PowerBook. I popped the card into the slot and the signal-strength bars appear in the top status area. I've got a signal. The LED on the card is flashing. "Connect" fails and tells me I'm not configured. Connection Manager knows the card type, but insists it's a modem and wants a phone number to call, a username and a pssword.
The folks at Sprint gave me three numbers: an MSL, and MDN and an MSID, but I can't find any configuration window into which I can enter those values.
What am I missing? Assume I know nothing. You'll be very close. |

You've come to the right place! This forum will get you going. Your card needs to be activated before you can use it. Did the folks at Sprint do that for you? They can do it on a PC even though you will use it on a Mac.
If you can't wait to go to the Sprint store, you can reach the "Activate Card" menu by holding down the option key on your Mac keyboard while pressing the EVDO menu item (with the bars) at the top. I would assume it will prompt you for several items you probably have. Others on the forum should step in here since I haven't done it myself.
Does your Internet Connect dialog show a "Novatel Wireless Merlin CDMA" tab at the top? If so click it. It should say "Configuration: Sprint (Main Number)", "Phone Number: #777", Account name at sprintpcs.com, and a password shown as all black dots (I never entered an account name at sprintpcs.com or password -- the install just loaded it).
It might be helpful if you told us what city you live in so we can guage the signal you might be getting.
Good luck

| Thanks, Michael. It was that page that convinced me to head to the Sprint store. It says: "Insert your EVDO card and click Connect and you are connected." I've been reading the site for a few weeks, and the impression I get from that page is that the 10.4.7 release of OS X means things *do* work out of the box. |

| I just re-read the page, and I still don't see what's required. But I found a Windows machine and activated the card. It now works under Windows, but not on the Mac. I see signal bars, but I still can't connect. Still thinks it's a modem and wants a phone#, username, password. The device doesn't appear in the list of modems. |
