Maybe the moderators can put this valuable info somewhere useful. I think everyone interested in getting the EVDO should know this.

I bought a Compaq Presario laptop last week, brand new. Found out it can't be used with the EVDO because the Card slot was an Express Card slot and the Merlin S620 from Sprint needed a regular PC Slot. Neither Verizon or Sprint has an aircard available for Express Slots so Compaq jumped the gun.

Sprint said that the Express Slot Cards are in testing phases and they should be out soon. Apparently it works a bit faster and better.

So make sure you look for a laptop with a regular pc slot. If it has a little emblem of a mail with lines next to it like express mail, then dont get that!

Good Luck.

Old news and once again new buyers are caught in the not yet available zone. Same thing happened with Firewire, USB, USB2, etc.

Most new portables have this express slot. The problem is that they use the small card slot rather than the 54 and they do not also offer a companion PC Card slot just as they have usb, ethernet and firewire ports.

I would rather have all three card slots rather than a CD Drive...

I know about this problem already.

Those new laptop willl have this new express slot.

I dont know what to do. I want to get a new laptop, but none of the EVDO company have the express card.

Dell got the option where you can get the EVDO embedded on the laptop, but it cost $160 something. I can get the card at cheaper rate thru co. discount.

So I dont know what to do. I guess a few more months.

I believe Sony notebook have a express and PCMCIA slot.

You can take a look at Asus and Sager notebooks which still feature PCMCIA slots. Sony has a couple of models out with both slots. Look over at notebookreview.com and notebookforums for options. This upgrade has been somewhat annoying to many as it stands now.

I love Sony Vaio! I have had a desktop Sony for 4 years now and still runs like new. I had a laptop Sony but the only reason I don't use that anymore is because it has Windows 98 and the stupid screen hinge broke. But otherwise I'd spend a few extra hundred and buy Sony.

Maybe I'll do that.

The manufacturers that have both PCMCIA and ExpressCards are the Smart ones - they are making the transition to the new ExpressCards much easier on consumers.

We try our best to let people know, BUT there are many who go to a store buy their items and then find the "card doesn't fit" in their laptop. That only makes people really angry.

For my money Sager makes the best notebooks . They custom configure every laptop to the buyers specifications and only use the best components . They are one of the few laptop manufacturers that offers 7200 rpm harddrives .

From everything have read about express cards, they're due out end of June 2006. So the interim solution would seem to be to 1. Wait, 2. Buy an express card to PCMCIA adapter. 3. Buy the KR1 router. Last two solutions would be the most expensive, obviously, but maybe you could resell the adapter and cardbus and buy the new expresscard when it becomes available in the next two weeks. Wink

^Another option is to buy an EVDO phone that can tether as a USB or Bluetooth modem.

I have a Dell Inspiron B130, verizon said they'd sell me a tether ("mobile office kit") for $40 and I could use the slower broadband network (older phone, LG6100) for $60/month, no contract. Dell also sells

Which goes inside the laptop, but I can wait till the end of the month for the express card if it will be cheaper and/or perform better

We will be reviewing the ExpressCard (XV620) as soon as it is available and stress test it to see how well it performs.

Interesting link. Looks like you can add it to a cart "and away we go".

Yet we've spoken with many callers to Booster-Antenna that indicated they could not purchase this card alone, as a self-installed add on (hint: build a router with it or put it in another brand of notebook). Perhaps policy has changed.
