I just got off the phone with Embarq (Sprint's new spinoff home/wireless/Internet service). They are pretty new and they are in the process of training their customer service reps. I figured I'd share what I learned...

They have a limited number of cell phone models available. One of them (and the only one which provides EVDO service, from what I can tell) is similar, if not identical, to the PPC-6700. It has Internet capability (I didn't ask the price for that). Unfortunately, they do not have a Phone-As-Modem (PAM) plan, yet.

For those of you who are considering a cellular broadband card for your laptop, they offer the "Merlin 620" with Unlimited Access for $69.95/month (if you buy one of their cell phones with a cell phone plan). If you don't buy one of their cell phones, the cellular broadband card service is $89.95/month.

I told the lady I spoke with that they should develop a PAM plan for use with their 6700 model.

If you're interested, the site is http://www.embarq.com

Interesting. What does the extra $10/month get you over mobile broadband?

It is surprising that it is $10/month more than the Sprint service. I couldn't find any pricing on the website.

On the 6700 phone, it is already capable of doing PAM without needing a PAM account. It is the only EVDO phone where they can't track USB tethered usage vs internal usage. Not certain it would apply to the Embarq version if they have their own firmware but I'd bet it's the same as Sprint's.
