Hi, I am considering buying a new phone and I want EV-DO. I had a general question...and tech support with the various carriers has been unhelpful thus far.

EV-DO r0 seems to be the newest version that is currently available. Rumor is that Sprint will have upgraded to Rev A by 2007. If I were to buy a phone...for example Treo 700p (which is EV-DO r0), would I be able to take advantage of Rev A with this phone?

In other words, what is it that makes a phone compatible with a particular version of EV-DO? Is it the phone itself (in which case I would need a new phone to support Rev A) or is it a card in the phone (in which case I would need a new card to support Rev A).

If it the case that I would need to buy a Rev A phone, what are the phones that support Rev A?

Also, I am a current T-Mobile subscriber. As far as I can tell, all they offer (and plan to offer in the near future) is EDGE. Is this correct?

Look for Verizon and Sprint to both have EVDO Rev A.

Sprint is the first one to announce it, time will tell who is the first to deploy it.

EVDO Rev A Cards (possibly phones will probably be available the end of the year. HOWEVER, they will not give you any speed increases until Verizon and Sprint start upgrading their EVDO Rev 0 towers to EVDO Rev A.

All current EVDO Rev 0 phones/cards will be backwards compatible with EVDO Rev A towers. So, your devices will work, just not at the faster speeds. EVDO Rev A requires a new chipset inside cards and phones to work at the faster speeds.
