And perhaps a bit better view of the same:

I work around Sea-Tac airport and drive around the King-Pierce-Snohomish county area quite a lot. Today I noticed I was getting 1MBps/500K (down/up) and from my home where I was getting 300-400K, I'm now getting 618/84. Woops! Now it's 695/87. And plugging in the booster antenna... (drum roll please!) 877/103. I'm using http://test.lvcm.com as the test site.

It would be a guess, but I think Verizon might be tweaking the service a bit.

Any EVDO benchmark showing over ~128kbps UP is most likely due to Venturi-related proxying/caching/compression and it's not a useful number.

The Venturi client *may* be useful for 1xRTT connections under some circumstances, but I've found it to be an irritant with EVDO connections.

I mis-spoke....

My tests do not use any proxy or caching applications. I don't use Venturi at all. I now recall that EVDO uses the 1xRTT channel for upload and that would peak out around 144Kbps under ideal circumstances.

That being said, I'll retest from Sea-Tac where I have been getting the best signal. Right now my EVDO RSSI is measuring about 81 and I'm seeing about 700/97.

I bagged using Venturi as the proxy sometimes would fail or wind up in someone's firewall rules and proved more of a problem than it was worth. I can't recall if it ever helped on upload speeds.

A re-test showed 1.03Mbps/103Kbps. Don't know where I got the 500 upload. Thanks for the heads-up.

I saw a transmit speed of 193.6 Kbps today in Redmond - with Venturi disabled.
