| Quote: | Are We There Yet?' Ease the Pain of Family Road Trips With High-Tech Tools From Verizon Wireless
LAUREL, Md., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- "Are we there yet?" The summer travel season is here, and for parents set to embark on family road trips, those four small words, endlessly repeated, are sometimes all it takes to turn the magical adventure into a very unpleasant car ride. To help remove the sting, Verizon Wireless offers several tools to ease the stress of family car trips and make travel more sane.
For those of us who dream of an onboard GPS device, dream no longer. VZ Navigator service provides all the features of an advanced navigation system on your wireless phone at a fraction of the price of other GPS systems. Available on three Verizon Wireless handsets -- the LG VX9800 and Motorola's RAZR and V325, VZ Navigator provides voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions with auto-rerouting if you miss a turn. The service also allows local searches of nearly 14 million locations to help travelers find the nearest restaurants, gas stations, shopping options, transit terminals, museums and other points of interest. With VZ Navigator you will always know where you are, what's around you and how to get to virtually any destination. The service is $2.99 a day or $9.99 a month and is expected to be available on all new Verizon Wireless phones by year end.
MG FuelFinder helps save money by finding gas stations with the lowest prices for fuel no matter where you travel. Daily pricing is available for over 110,000 stations throughout the United States, including nearly 1,400 in Maryland, DC and Virginia. Users can view daily high and low prices along with a list of local stations displayed by price including brands, addresses and phone numbers as well as to directions to any station you select. All that's needed is a $5 monthly subscription to Verizon Wireless Mobile Web 2.0 and a $1.99 monthly FuelFinder fee.
Vindigo® City Guide, available for $2.99 a month, helps travelers spend less time looking and more time doing. Vindigo's all-inclusive information service includes thousands of restaurants, stores, bars, ATMs, museums, parking lots, pharmacies and more for most metropolitan areas. It's searchable by location or name and delivered with reviews, interactive color maps and door-to-door directions. Also included are movie show times, local weather and live music schedules.
BathroomFinder, included in Vindigo's City Guide, can put an end to perilous potty stops. You can search for all nearby bathrooms and review their ratings in categories like cleanliness, safety, wheelchair accessibility and even the availability of changing tables for the littlest members of the family. Choose a bathroom location and you'll find driving directions to get you there.
Roadside Assistance, provided by GE Motor Club, includes towing, locksmith and jump-start services, flat tire replacement and enough free fuel to get you to the nearest station when you run out. All for just $3 a month.
Wireless accessories are critical to safe and enjoyable family travel and include a vehicle power charger to keep your battery fully-charged and a hands-free headset that allows you to keep both hands on the wheel while on a call. Be mindful of local laws governing the use of hand-held wireless phones. New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Washington, D.C. all have laws requiring the use of hands-free devices. |
I have this on my RAZR and it is very very cool. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

The interface on my razr is awful. I can't imagine trying to use it for a gps. I just got a garmin i5 for $330 with all the USA pre loaded and my own custom pois

and most importantly a user friendly menu design. Most of those "add-ons" for the verizon are included in dedicated gps systems and without any mothly fees.
Verizon's "attempt" at gps might be much better on a better phone though.
Are they using Navtec at least?

| How is it technically implemented? Does the phone have GPS receiver + GPS antenna build-in or does it just report some location related parameters to the network and network calculates the real location? If phone has build-in GPS hardware, how does it work indoors when there is no line-of-sight to satellites? Is it possible to get that location information to a PC via data cable or similar? |

The phone has GPS built-in.
When inside, it somehow triangulates the towers and "guesses" at the location, which is VERY close.
I am not sure how one would get the GPS data to the PC (or if even possible). _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |
