|
|
I've been told that any Verizon phone that has VCAST can NOT be used as a modem for a laptop. Is this true? I need to connect my laptop to the WWW when wireless is not available. Since this is only occasional I can't justify the PCMCIA card. Is it true that I need to get a cell phone that has Verizon's "National Access" to use it as a connection for my laptop?
Many thanks!! |

verizon Vcast phones, have the DUN ( dialup networking ability ) disabled
but it is only a setting in the phone and it can be 'enabled'
on some phones it is easier to do than others
BUT if you get a NON-vcast phone it is a NON-issue as the DUN is NOT disabled
the question, becomes, do you really want a Vcast phone, or just a phone that you can connect to the internet occasionaly
almost everything on Vcast music, video clips etc... is an extra cost per item above the $15 vcast monthly fee
the free stuff is weather reports & news clips
if you want a vcast phone so you can have a portable video player
then buy the LGvx9800 it's on specail right now $149 with a new 2yr contract
and yes you need NA on your contract, but i think that is automaticaly included with all new contracts now, as part of NA is the GIN and the NO roaming Nationwide
'howardforums.com' is loaded with hacks and info about DUN on different phones |

the VX9800 has the DUN Enabled out of the box. But...it is slow.
You can check this on the 8100, 8300 and the 9800's by doing the following
->Press OK
->type 0 Seven Times (this enters you into the hidden services menu)
*WARNING!!!!* BE VERY FREAKIN CAREFULL IN HERE! If you dont document your changes. If you start messing with things you do not know. You can mess your phone up and have to bring it in to have it factory reset by the verizon people.*****
->Press 4 (Data)
->Press 5 (Cable DUN)
->Select ON
->Press OK
->Press 6 (BT DUN Mode)
->Select On
->Press OK
You can change how you can use the DUN option. I love Blue Tooth and I will tell you how to use this via Blue Tooth.
In the same menu as before...
->Press 1 (Port Map/DATA)
->Select BLUETOOTH
->Press OK
->Press 2 (Port Map/Diag)
->Select BLUETOOTH
->Press OK
->Press END
After this you should be able to use the phone to dial out using your Bluetooth adapter. I worked for me and was cool besides the slower than molasses speeds. |

Many phones from Verizon can be tethered as a modem to your computer. I use a RAZR all the time. However, you have to pay $59.99/mo for it to work. Many go with the PC Card (or ExpressCard) instead (same price). _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

well i have been "tethering" to the high speed verizon network with my laptop for a long time now with no problems. i have done this with my moto e815, LG vx9800 , and now my moto Q.
it will work with just about any modern vcast phone but with you will have to do a little altering of of the file system on the phone. you can use the 1X (slower) network with no worries since verizon doesnt watch this due to the fact that it is slower and uses minutes. however if you tether to the EV (high speed) network on a phone then you have to be careful of your data use. if you thether to just do a little surfing , check email, IM, etc then you will be fine and you dont want to be connected for hours or anything. the only time i have read of verizon catching anyone doing this is when the get stupid and download large files or use it for share file utilities.
with the Q or other data plan pda/smartphones you are paying high dollars for your data plan already and these devices are able to pull a lot of data themselves so you can be a lot more open about your dta usage. verizon does offer a $15/month plan to add to your pda/smartphone to legaly tether but i have never paid that and use my Q to access the web all the time.
again i want to mention that i have been doing this a long time but have been smart about it and that is important.
if you need more help or answers i would be glad to help.
good luck |
