|
|
Hi,
I just joined this forum and I have a question. Is EVDO frequency dependent? If I'm on Verizon which uses 800/1900 mhz, is EVDO on 1900 mHz while voice and 1X are on 800 mHz? Is this consistant or does this vary from market to market? In my area there is no EVDO yet, just 1X and we are only on 800 mHz. Up north in SLC, UT they have EVDO but it is only available downtown and at a seemingly short range which is typical of 1900 mHz as it does not propagate as far.
Just curious. |

See this thread. A Verizon cellsite tech known as cellgod had some explanation that Verizon has only done EVDO in a couple 800mhz exclusive markets...
http://www.evdoforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=611&highlight=
EVDO will work on 800mhz but has less data capacity (same voice capacity). 800mhz does have the advantage over 1900mhz of longer range and deeper penetration into buildings, but capacity limitations are apparently significant. Alltel is all 800mhz AFAIK and still has EVDO in 11 markets. Verizon has tried 800mhz in a couple markets but hasn't seemed to rollout to any new markets that are exclusively 800mhz - not certain of this but it appears this way. Apparently all but 2 Verizon markets with EVDO have 1900mhz cellsites mixed in with 800mhz cellsites.
Sprint has all 1900mhz towers on 100% of their network. This may explain why Sprint has EVDO in more markets. |

| What about shared towers? Alltel has told me the area I am in is off a Verizon tower. Would it still be 800mhz? I ask because I am thinking of going with a Yagi rather than my omni. |

Go to www.wirelessadvisor.com . Type in your zip code. It will tell you what frequencies the carriers are operating on . To find tower locations go to www.cellreception.com |
