|
|
| Quote: | Surf the web on your laptop without Wi-Fi, DSL, or cable.
Access the Internet on your laptop at broadband-like speeds4 without having to find or pay extra to use a Wi-Fi hotspot. Just connect the Palm® Treo™ 700p smartphone to your laptop. Then surf the Internet, send and receive email using your favorite email application, and access files from a server — just as you would if you were using DSL, cable Internet, or Wi-Fi.2,3 With this dial-up networking (DUN) connection, you shouldn't need to buy any extra hardware or carry a separate PC wireless data card.
Fast download speeds with EvDO.
EvDO speeds on your laptop mean you can download pages faster — at an average connection speed of 400-600kbps using a USB connection and 250-400kbps using a Bluetooth connection4.
Two ways to connect.
If your laptop is Bluetooth® enabled, you should be able to connect the Treo 700p smartphone to your laptop via Bluetooth wireless technology. Otherwise, you can connect using the included USB cable.3 When you connect with USB, you'll be charging your smartphone at the same time you're using your laptop.
Put the Internet on hold.
While you're using your smartphone as a modem, you should still be able to make and receive calls — the dial up networking connection will simply be suspended while your call is in progress. |
OK, so we know that tethering your Treo 700p as an EVDO modem will work for Windows computers, but what about PowerBook, iBook, MacBook and other Mac OS X based computers? Palm has a much better history of supporting Mac.
As soon as we get a Treo 700p to play with, we will give it a try and post the results here.
Likewise, if anyone has already tried, please post your comments and results to this thread. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier

According to David Pogue's review of the Treo 700P, it says:
| Quote: | | You can connect the laptop to the Treo either with a cable (Windows only) or wirelessly, using a Bluetooth connection (Mac or Windows). In that case, the phone remains in your pocket, invisibly treating your laptop to high-speed e-mail, chat and Web service. |
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/18/technology/18pogue.html?ex=1148097600&en=633f8e217060d2ec&ei=5087%0A
So, this means that for Mac users, you cannot use a USB Cable (faster) but you can use BlueTooth (slower) to connect to your Mac. This might work for some that need email once and awhile, but for road warriors who need speed, it may not cut it.
More later, after we get our hands on one... _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Looks like Verizon & Sprint will be carrying the Treo 700p around the same time.
We are planning on getting one to try to tether via USB and BlueTooth. We expect BlueTooth will work fine (just take a huge performance hit), we are hoping that when you plug in a Treo 700p and go to:
System Preferences -> Network
The Treo 700p is recognized, if it is, we should be able to get it to be tethered for Verizon or Sprint.
If anyone gets one of these and tries on a PowerBook or MacBook / MacBook Pro, please post your results. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| Quote: | | Although the Treo syncs easily with both Macs (with iSync or Palm Desktop) and PCs (with Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook), Mac users don't get the ultimate prize—the ability to use the Treo as a USB modem on Sprint's EV-DO network. With it hooked up to a PC using Sprint's Connection Manager, I got excellent speeds of 900 to 1,100 Kbps. That's awesome. But when I connected to a Mac using Bluetooth, speeds slowed down to about 200 to 300 Kbps. The problem is the Treo's Bluetooth 1.2 stack, which is just too slow to handle the full speed of EV-DO. |

I've seen some pricing structures being bandied about for Verizon and apparently with a phone (450min)/unlimited data package and 15 a month for tethering it will run about 95.00 per month.
Right now, I'm paying 100 for the V620 unlimited and 500min of wireless phone through Verizon. Not a lot of difference but I can't get a new computer because of those damn express cards. I have a Treo 650 now and love it.
If that pricing is for real I would get one in a heartbeat, I could hook up to any computer with a USB port! _________________ Dell M1210 5700 |

Ordered 700p on Tuesday, 11:am, Arrived Thursday 3pm.
Great looking phone.
I bought the phone for EVDO. I previously used a Treo 650 and wanted the faster network connection.
Tried for about a hour to use the bluetooth DUN - No Luck. If you turn on logging, The Treo responds to the modem commands, but does not authenticate when connected.

Called Verizon and found out that you need to add a $15 dollar tethered option to your data plan to enable bluetooth DUN. Doesn't matter whether you use a USB cable or not.
Wtf?
I already spent a fortune on the unlimited data plan, now I have to kick up another $15 dollars a month to use EVDO w/unlimited data?
Anyway, EVDO is quit a difference over the regular dialup. I hit a bandwidth tester site and got 206.8 kilobits speed. Not sure how good this is relative to bluetooth wireless DUN on Mac, so if anyone can test it out and post their speeds, that would be great.
While on EVDO, if you get a phone call. The call rings through and the 700p displays the callerID info on the screen. It doesn't break the EVDO connection. It'll ring a few times and then go to voice mail. You do have an option to reply with text message, pretty cool.
I'm pretty glad, it didn't break the connection. I tried again, and was able to talk on the phone while connected. Pretty cool.
Love the phone, hate the carrier, and will be looking at other options including Sprint. I'm sick of Verizon and I'm going to tell everyone I know to switch carriers. This is ridiculous already.
I looked around the internet and found a vzw code that might have worked if I tried it before signing up for the $15 a month tethered options:
| Code: |
#*#TETHERED + SEND (#*#83843433 + SEND): Enable Tethered mode
|
Also, I have the phone, but have been unable to tether (use USB Cable) to connect to EVDO. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm more than willing to give it a go?
I would have liked to try this before I forked out the dough. If someone can try it and let me know if it works.
Everything else is OK. If anyone has an opinion of VersaMail versus SnapperMail you can pm me. Thanks, Neo-X |

Hey Neo,
Can you test the following:
1) Plug in Treo 700p to your Mac via USB
2) Goto System Preferences -> Network
Does the Mac immediately put up a dialog box telling you it found a new port/device? _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Nothing happens at all. It's as though the Mac (OSX 10.4.6, MacBook] doesn't know it's there ;(
No dialog box, nothing new added to Network Configuration. |

That is not good.
That answers the question about tethering via USB. Normally, it would need to be recognized by the Mac for that to work via USB. It is possible for someone to come out with Mac Treo 700p drivers to have it recognized and usuable, but it isn't going to work over USB.
I am sure it works fine over BlueTooth, BUT that will limit the speed that you can get.
So, it doesn't look too promising. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

OK....Calling All nerds we need a USB Bluetooth Modem Driver so we can use our Treo's to connect to the Internet via USB Cable..
| Code: |
Palm Handheld:
Version: 1.00
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Palm, Inc.
Product ID: 0x0061
Serial Number: PalmSN12345678
Vendor ID: 0x0830
|
The Hardware knows its connected to USB....there's just no Driver, I guess, for it to connect to...

I have 2 of the 700p and I have been able to get the Bluetooth DUN to work on the MacBook Pro but there are issues:
1) It does not disconnect cleanly...the "Disconnecting" continues to show up on the MacBook Pro (MBP) menubar and the "status" continues to say "disconnecting" even when Internet Connect is shut down. I was not even able to "force quit" I had to log out and back in AND I have to reset the 700p otherwise you get an error on the 700p that says the DUN is still active
2) connection drops UNLESS you set Network Utility to "send an unlimited number of pings" - this was true for the A900 as well...but the A900 does not have the issues listed in #1 above.
I have duplicated the above issues with 2 different phones on 2 different MacBook Pros so they appear to be REAL BUGS.
I will call Sprint...but I am not hopeful.
The good news is you can make and receive calls while connected. |

I just spoke to a great guy in Sprint advance technical support. He was going to try to reproduce the error and get back to me.
You can get it to disconnect more cleanly by turning off Bluetooth...but you still have to do all of the following to get it to connect again.
1) restart MacBook Pro
2) soft reset 700p
2) delete pairing and re-pair 700p with MacBook Pro
THEN...it will connect again...but don't forget to do the constant PINGS or the connection will drop and you will have to repeat all these steps again. |

More updates...I think I have resolved the part of the issue.
Make sure:
1) System Preferences...Bluetooth...Settings - ALL boxes checked
2) System Preferences...Bluetooth...Sharing..."Bluetooth-PDA-Sync" should be the only one checked and only in the "On" column. ALSO - make sure "Type" is RS-232...not Modem
3) restart computer
4) repair...and it seems to connect/disconnect just fine now.
I still have to do the constant PING to avoid the connection dropping...but I can live with that until they fix that. |

If you don't do the constant ping, does the connection drop in 8-10 seconds?
Sounds like the phone is going in dormant mode, usually not an issue/problem, however pinging will prevent the EVDO connection from going in dormant mode. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |
