FYI, USB Modem v1.42 is working flawlessly for me on both my PowerMac G5 DP 2.0GHz and also my MacBook Pro 2.16GHz via USB to my Palm 700p Sprint.

I have macbook pro and Treo 700p. How do you use resco explorer to install the hack? Can someone provide link to it(hack)? Also the first time I tried it ,my treo was put in an endless resetting loop. Any help is appreciated.

Check out this thread for detailed installation instructions...

BTW, some have received their bill statement and have not seen any data charges beyond the basic data plan. So for Sprint, the hack works on the $15/month data PowerVision acct and for Verizon, it works on the $45/month data acct.

Use at your own risk of possible TOS violation.

As a test I tried connecting with Bluetooth and USB Cable using Mobile-stream.com (free trial) software. Here's what I got.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

BlueTooth - 200-300 kbps
USB Cable - 125 - 200 kbps

Curious???

USB Cable should be 2-3 times faster than Bluetooth? Anyone else have different results on MacOSX using 700p.

Cheers

xenophon: My MacBook Pro and Sprint Treo 700p is coming in next week. I already have the unlimited data plan because I have GoodLink service. Do I still need to do this 'resco file' hack if I'm able to sucessfully connect my Macbook Pro via the Mobile Stream USB modem to my Sprint Treo 700p?

Thank you all for so much great information.

I am switching over from a Toshiba laptop with a EVDO card to a MacBook Pro. I am using Verizon and have paid for their broadband service at an exorbitant rate. I have a Treo 650, which I love.

If I get a Treo 700P, does this mean I can give the card and broadband service to one of my employees? If so, how long will the Treo 700P last in the broadband mode before it loses battery power? Would I be better off using Parallels vs. OSX to communciate with the Treo 700P?

yes you can give the card away but remember that you can't make a call with the 700p and get data at the same time. If you make a call the data stream stays connected but is disabled uintil you hang up.

As for battery, I use the usb cable so the phone stays charged from the macbook pro.

btw...I needed the USB Modem v1.42 software for the Palm to get it to work via usb even though others have not needed it???

also...the connection stays on fine for hours without the pinging others have mentioned.

I use Parrallels too and love it but the other day I tried for the first time to use IE on XPPRO on Macbook Pro through Parrallels and could not get a connection through usb cable to 700p??? I was on the road and didn't have the time to try to figure it out.

OSX with "the Missing Sync" has worked great interfacing to 700p.

Thank you, NEdually, for your excellent comments.

Since upgrading from the 650 to the 700P will cost several hundred dollars more than buying a card for my MacPro, are there any other substantial reasons to do so? One post said the 700P had longer range? Anyone elso have that experience?

From http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/:

Down 874 Kbps
Up 124 Kbps

I am still experiencing repeated connection drops on Verizon.

I have PPP Echo on.

Any advice?

My wife and I intend to get MacBook Pro Laptops, so we just moved from Treo 600 and 650 with Kyocera KPC650 to Treo 700p.

To my knowledge, the KPC650 is not compatible with MacBook Pro, which uses an ExpressCard/34 slot.

Just got my Treo 700p (Sprint) in the mail this morning and can't wait to get it set up. While doing some searches I ran across this...

PCS Intel Releases EV-DO Modem Script for Mac OS X

Is this something that would be used in conjunction with the USB Modem app? Has anyone tried it?

Can't wait to have some connectivity during my train commute =)

** Update **

Got everything working..

Treo 700p - Sprint - MacBook Pro - USB - Chicago

Tried with the USB Modem script and the one I linked and didn't see much of an improvement on the download speed, but upload was improved by a good factor.

Throughout my various speed tests today my top speeds (from within the confines of my office (which gets horrible reception))

Down - 874
Up - 77
