I did discover something called "usbmodem" at http://mobile-stream.com/usbmodem.html and am working on getting that working. It has issues but looks promising. It claims to allow USB tethering of Treo 700p to OS X just like I (and you) want. Getting there... when I have success, I'll post how.

I spent an hour messing with it on my 15" G4 Powerbook; no joy. It tries to dial but never connects...I do have Bluetooth working, but was hoping to reduce power draw of Bluetooth and improve speed/reliability.

Parallels for Mac is very cool and I use it on my MacBook Pro and the speed is incredible and it works great. I also have BootCamp installed on the same MacBook, so I can directly boot into XP too. It is an ideal setup for testing.

I have noticed with Parallel, I will get the following message, when I try to use a USB device:

I can boot up under BootCamp and use the device without a problem. I suspect, they will fix this in the released version of Parallels.

For those trying to get Mobile-Stream working, there is this disclaimer on the download page:

Quote:
Warning for Treo 700p and Mac OS X users: USBModem 1.40 is known to have problems in this configuration. This is expected to be fixed in the next version.

This is twice I've seen posts saying this, without bothering to explain how exactly this is done. Can you share the details of how this works? I'm sure you can appreciate that it's frustrating just hearing you say you were successful when I'm not having any success. Please? Thanks. Smile

Prerequisite: I had to call Verizon and add their stupid tethering option to the phone plan.

1) I paired the phone and my laptop using the Bluetooth Preference Pane in the laptop. Had to type a number into the laptop and when they detected each other typed the same # into the phone...then they show up in each other's 'trusted' device list.

2) Downloaded VZAccess (I'm on Verizon) from http://vzw.smithmicro.com/download/index.html. I said Macintosh OS, PC Card, KPC650, and I lost the original CD. It doesn't seem to matter what you say as long as you can download the software. NOTE: it appears this software is supposed to come on the CD, but it doesn't...it takes me to an invalid website, hence I started searching for it on the web.

3) I put my phone # in (the website asks for it), and downloaded VZAccess_Mac_2.2.dmg.

4) Install this software

5) Launch VZAccess

6) The phone and laptop communicate, and within a few seconds the Connect button at the top goes active. Click Connect and you're done.

Ok, a few things / questions:

1) I did everything the "very" previous poster said, and it would fail on authentication each and every time. It almost gets there, so it is very interesting.

2) what do you mean you had to add "tethering" to the Verizon plan? I have not had anyone at Verizon tell me this. They said that you don't need to do a thing if you don't mind paying out the ying/yang for usage, however, I have the 44.95 unlimited data national access / broadband plan. So I don't get this add "tethering" thing? When it was mentioned on a previous post, I think it was with regard to Sprint... Not Verizon...

3) The error message in Parallels seems to initially have been a problem with my keyboard being plugged into the MBP, however, after disconnecting that, the same error occured. I believe this has something to do with the USB / Parallels driver having "issues" still.

4) you said you went to the BootCamp side and "it worked fine". What does this mean? The wire connected 700P worked fine on the XP side? If so, that's my first best choice at the moment, however, I really would like to get it working in the Mac side.

If you are a MBP owner - you might recall (initially) the "contest" to see who could get dual booting to work. Well, I would like to propose a similar deal. I will pay someone $100 to get my MBP to work (with the cable) with my 700P (Verizon). No BS here. I really want this to work....

Thanks,

Bob

I am on Verizon. I have the $45 unlimited data plan. To connect your laptop through your phone, you need to add a $15 / month option (in addition to unlimited data, or whatever data plan you are on) to allow tethering your phone to your laptop (on my account info it's called BBA CONNECT UNL). I can't find info on this from Verizon's public pages, but do a little research and you'll find it, or call them. I tried connecting without this tethering option and I get what you are reporting in bullet #1 -- connects, and then immediately disconnects. Both Sprint and Verizon added this charge/feature (tethering).

I can answer this. You have to pay an extra fee to allow the phone to be tethered to the laptop and used like this. It's an extra service. You don't get charged minutes for Internet access, I was told, only monthly for the plan. Verizon becomes your ISP.

Hmm, I wonder if usbmobile needs VZAccess to succeed? I'm optimistic this can work, for no good reason. Smile
Here is what I emailed support@mobile-stream.com
I am trying to use you usbmodem software. I have an OS X Mac Book and a Treo 700p connected via usb. My provider is Verizon.
I have installed the software and can connect, but after just a brief time, a matter of a few seconds, the ability to surf disappears and connections are impossible. Right now I'm waiting for google to load and it's been about 30 seconds or more. I can see in Internet Connect that data is being "Sent" but not "Receive"'d.
Perhaps I've missed some subtleties. The user manual seems straightforward and I am pretty sure I followed the directions. Your webpage says there are known issues with my configuration. I have seen others claim no problems (e.g. http://www.gabrielserafini.com/).
But now after a cople minutes, I got Cannot Load Address in my browser (for google.com).
Can you help? Thanks

OK. So I called Verizon. Got the additional $15 "tether" charge added, and the stupid thing works like a hose! Why on Earth didn't they, or Palm for that matter, suggest this. So, thanks! Now I need to get it working on USB, and I will be happy. It is a bit slow on the bluetooth, but at this point, I'm thrilled that words as well as it does.

Many thanks! If I can get an answer to the BootCamp question, about being able to then use the cable to connect, I'll be even happier!

What a happy day!

Bob

Emailed with some the smartest tech folks I know and no one can answer this question. I emailed with people who write the reviews for the big papers, and they didn't know either.

So let's see who knows.

On the Verizon Install CD, when you click on the autoinstall, for a Mac, it installs VersaMail and TWO Iconless programs on your 700p.

1) VMNetLogger- logs your use of Versa Mail and adds a note to your memos everytime something goes awry

2) PassThruSync- when you click on this icon you send your 700p into a downward spiral of starts and restarts. Before it goes down the proverbial crapper it shows a Palm screen with a bunch of data entry lines.

Does anyone know what PassThruSync does???

Thanks in advance!

so I got the bluetooth modem to work now for my 700p with my iBook G4.
I used this
Quote:
) System Preferences...Bluetooth...Settings - ALL boxes checked
2) System Preferences...Bluetooth...Sharing..."Bluetooth-PDA-Sync" should be the only one checked and only in the "On" column. ALSO - make sure "Type" is RS-232...not Modem
3) restart computer

now however, I can't sync. My phone says
Quote:
unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is i use by another application.

I've restarted several times, but still the same thing. Is the modem mode stil l connected? Wondering if anyone has had this problem.

Thanks.

Have you checked on the phone under HotSync under the Local tab to be sure your computer is named the target, and it's not trying to use the cradle/cable or IR? BTW, I recommend you just sync via "cradle/cable" (USB), it's much quicker, but to each their own.

So I guess, I should have been clearer, is PassThruSync needed for Broadband connectivity?

What does it do?

Hello Rich,

USB Modem 1.40 is known to have problems when used for USB tethering
with Mac OS X. We are working on this defect and are expecting that v1.41
will fix it.
