Where do I set Network Utility to do a constant ping? I don't seem to see it anywhere.

The best I got was 10 minutes of connection and then I got the perpetual Disconnecting problem on my MacBook. I usually have to restart both the phone and the computer, and re-pair them to be able to connect again. IE, this sucks... But hopefully constant pinging will make things easier. Thanks

Have you checked on the phone under HotSync under the Local tab to be sure your computer is named the target, and it's not trying to use the cradle/cable or IR? BTW, I recommend you just sync via "cradle/cable" (USB), it's much quicker, but to each their own.

yes I checked and my computers name is directly underneath the place where it says sync. as far as "cradle/cable" goes I'm really trying to make myself a wireless mobile office because I have a tendancy to both tangle and lose all my wires.

still can't get it to work though. it has synced before, and I am using a Mac also.

Have you tried going into your network settings on the network preference pane, clicking on the PPP options, and then unchecking "Send PPP echo packets"?

PostPosted: Wed Jun 14, 2006 4:24 am    Post subject: Activated my Palm 700p and got DUN to work via BT with OSX Reply with quote

Bought my Sprint 700p from Palm. Went to Sprint store to activate and disable my old Treo600. Took home and sync with MissingSync to get my contacts list on the new phone. Did not install any Palm software since Palm is not Mac-friendly any more. Missing Sync 5.1 is what I use now.

Had a hell of a time getting Bluetooth on Mac to see the 700p. Finally figured out to click "add to trusted" in order for the Mac to see the 700p.

In the Bluetooth setup on the MacBookPro, there is an option to set up the BT phone as a modem. I did that using my Sprint username and password and #777 as the phone number to dial. Also selected for Modem script Sprint PCS vision phone.

I made a new location called Treo700p where only Bluetooth and Airport are selected (will explain why I need Airport later on).

Clicked on Dial and Internet Connect popped up and dialed. For some reason, the first attempt failed and I noticed upon checking that the modem had reverted back to apple internal modem. I changed it back to Sprint PCS vision and everything worked! Got 230Kb/s connection speed according to Internet Connect.

Did not have to set up ping at all. First connection dropped after 4 minutes. Redialed and the connection has been up for 34 minutes now.

I did verify the BT check boxes as posted earlier. Only thing I did not do is activate continual pings with Network Utilities.

Once I got a reliable connection, I used Apple's wonderful Internet Sharing to broadcast my EVDO connection to WiFi using the Airport card. Set up my SSID and off I go.

I was able to see the SSID and connect with both WindowsXP as well as a new MacBook running 10.4. However, both browsers will not connect to apple.com. I have to manually set their tcp/ip DNS settings to 4.2.2.1 (verizon's DNS server they got via BBN, who built the original Arpanet, hence owning IP addresses with single digits!) Once I set up a DNS IP address to override the "default" (blank) which is usually via the "gateway", i.e. my EVDO connected MacBook Pro's IP address, all 3 computers were able to browse the internet using IE and Safari. WindowsXP Pro and MacOSX.

I guess I can return my Sprint 5740 card now since I was never able to get the stupid WindowsXP laptop to act as a gateway and share the EVDO connection with other laptops via WiFi. Who wants to have a Linksys or Kyocera router that needs a power outlet to work? My MacBookPro running on Battery power can now connect to my 700p in my pocket and be an instant HotSpot for all the laptops around me.

Watch out, Starbuck!

This exercise has only taken me 3 hours to do. Thanks for all who shared on this forum before me. You were all great to have contributed to my learning. Hope I can help those who follow after me.

What kind of speeds are you getting?

Report the results from:

http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Also, others have reported constant disconnects, did contant pinging solve that?

<b>Good news! You can now connect to Verizon with a treo 700p and OS X over USB.</b>
I have been trading emails with the people at http://mobile-stream.com and they have gotten their usbmodem software to work with OS X and Verizon. I encourage people to download it and see if it works for them.

http://www.mobile-stream.com/usbmodem.html.

I have gotten my MacBook (not pro) to connect to Verizon with a USB tethered connection. It disconnects in about 15 minutes, I don't know why. I don't have the echo packets thing turned on, is that what people mean by "contstant ping?" Please check this product out and give feedback. The speeds are much higher than what I get with bluetooth. Give them feedback! They made their version work for me in about 2 days.

Let us know when they solve the disconnect problem.

To do a constant Ping, open:

Applications -> Utilities -> Network Utility -> click on Ping tab, enter a domain name or IP Address, select "Send an unlimited number of pings"

This will allow your computer to "ping" another address and never stop. If the disconnect problem is due to inactivity, this will cause your computer to always be active.

Sure, I'll let you guys know, but I imagine some people will be happy to hear there is something that actually works out there. I do not think the disconnect was due to usbmodem. It connects without issue every time for me. There are no lockups, and surfing is fast.

I'll try the constant ping thing, but I agree that's a kludge that shouldn't be necessary -- it might be verizon's doing, though. This feature could perhaps be put into usbmodem.

Does this work with both Verizon and Sprint?

Which data services do you need from each (and what are their costs) to use this software for usb DUN on a Mac?

Hi Michael, I connected (took 3 tries this morning. First 2 times got modem error with Internet Connect) and ran the dslreports test and got 270/20 results. Upload speed only 20kb. But download at 270kb is respectable for BT connected modem.

I am not using pings to keep the connection alive. I am not getting frequent disconnects in my tests. If I do, will try the pinging trick.

Last night, my connection lasted over 100 minutes before it died and required reconnect.

Thanks for running this forum. Great resource. Can't believe a carrier like Sprint and Verizon will offer this new technology and charge so much money each month with ZERO tech support. In fact, a techie at Sprint told me if I use my Treo700p as modem, I will not be able to make or receive calls on it. (He was trying to get me to keep my PCMCIA card 5740.) Good thing I had read on this forum that he is wrong. I tested it last night and I can make calls with the phone just like a DSL on a landline while connected to the Internet.

I don't know anything about Sprint. I think it will. It's not that complicated. They just enable the modem on the phone somehow and supply your computer with the proper driver script.
As for the cost, I don't remember, but with everything, I think my Verizon bill is going to be a little less than $100 month, including a 450 minute plan for calls, the $15 modem fee, and some other bullshit fees, not sure what. I don't care, it's worth it to me to have it work at fast speeds.
I get way faster speeds over USB than with bluetooth, but I wasn't seeing 270 kpbs on bluetooth like some others. Maybe Sprint is better?

You may have had the cable connected while making a call but you can't do data/voice at the same time. When on the call, try web browsing... it should not work.

The phone also may ring if data is active (depends on phone model) but once you answer, data should suspend until hanging up and then resume.

CDMA phones today are not capable of simultaneous voice/data. There are dual mode CDMA/iDen phones coming that will allow it... and when VoIP phones come, it will be possible.

Ah, slight confusion. I was connected to the Internet using my T700p as a EvDO modem using DUN. I am using a MacBookPro surfing the web just now when I received a call on my wire-free T700p (look Ma, no wires). Phone was NOT plugged in the USB cable or even the Power recharge cable. I purposely click on a few links while I was on the call and my connection worked fine.

I did NOT try to use the Phone's Internet apps while on the call. I learned from my many years using PalmOS that you cannot ask this OS to do multitasking. I can't even look up my contacts list while on a call without losing my call with my T600.

So if I am talking on the phone, I do not try to do anything cute with the phone.

Good to know that if I am using my T700p as a hotspot, all my connected clients won't lose their connection every time I want to make a voice call.

After less than 24 hours with the T700p, I am loving it. The main reasons why I downgraded from the T650 back to my trusty T600 over a year ago have mostly been fixed in the T700p. Spacebar now works also to initiate a call and you don't have to scroll up first before scrolling down when viewing the call list! What a stupid bug that still hasn't been fixed on the T650. Can't wait to return the damn thing to Palm for $150.

Bottom Line: get the T700p particularly if you are a Mac user! It works great with Network Preferences, Internet Connect, and Internet Sharing.

T650, RIP.

I said I would follow up -- I just wanted to say, everything is working fine now for me USB-wise. Good luck to folks. Please see mobile-stream.com if you have more questions about their product. Thanks to the owners of this forum for letting us share answers here. It was very valuable to me
