It varies...but it can be as short as 8-10 seconds or as long as several minutes.
Pinging helps for sure.
Since my last post...I have had a few more issues with reconnecting...doesn't reconnect consistently. Once it froze my entire system. |

|

I just tried the above settings/instructions with my Sprint 700p/ MacBook Pro and after about 30 seconds of "connecting", I get the message Internet Connect - A modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again.
I was on the phone a couple days ago with Sprint technical assistance for over an hour and couldn't get this to work, so was hoping this was the solution. I have a feeling that something he had me do to try to fix the problem is now preventing the ability for this to work right using your instructions. |

My 700p and PowerBook G4 doesn't work either. Sprint support was completely useless. They refused to discuss supporting DUN unless I purchased a $45/month data network package (in addition to the $15/month Power Vision). They had no rational reply when I mentioned that the USB cable doesn't work with the Mac, so they sent me to Palm, who said Palm support for Mac and BT on 700p is only for HotSync -- again completely useless. Why else would anyone buy a 700p if not for the EVDO?
I installed the previously noted PhoneInterfaceLibrary_tether_hack.prc, but I still get the I get the same message:
"A modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again."
The Internet Connect log shows this:
| Code: |
Mon Jun 5 12:41:09 2006 : setting the port speed to 230K
Mon Jun 5 12:41:15 2006 : Dialing without tone
Mon Jun 5 12:41:16 2006 : Dialing #777
Mon Jun 5 12:42:26 2006 : Connect script failed
|
Are people who succeeded using the Sprint Vision Modem script or something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Officially you are suppose to have a PAM account for tethering to work, whether BT or USB. Sprint does not support Mac, on any phones - never did, never said they did. They do allow 3rd party supporters for Mac, you just can't go to Sprint for Mac support.
But some are getting the hack above to work on the basic $15 PowerVision acct (you'd have to wait for next billing cycle to know if it worked for sure). Mac users on bluetooth only. There are no Mac 700p USB drivers yet. Check with Jimmie Geddes in that thread or PM him. He got it to work on Mac.
BTW, 'official' unlimited PAM should be $40/month total with 2yr contract but additional $15 PowerVision should not be needed. The $40/month should include in-phone data as well as PAM. IMO, not worth it if only doing bluetooth. |

| I'm just looking for BT DUN to work between the Treo 700p and my PowerBook. It worked just fine with my Treo 650. So any help on getting that to work would be great -- I'm not holding my breath for USB drivers. |

I've got it working!
I had originally put the PhoneInterfaceLibrary_tether_hack.prc on the 700p via BT file transfer. Apparently that didn't do the trick. So after installing Resco Explorer, and recopying the hack, everything seems to work wonderfully. I used the Sprint Vision modem script. It's not clear if there's a better one or how one goes about creating a modem script which doesn't set the transfer speed to 230 kbps. I'm not getting screaming speed, but then again my converage at home sucks. Very happy to have it working like it did with the 650 -- if I actually see the EVDO speed that will be gravy. Thanks folks!!
BTW, you can keep the connection alive just fine with a lot less ICMP traffic by sending pings every 5 seconds instead of the default 1 via the Terminal command line:
ping -i 5 xx.xx.xx.xx |

| Careful with using the hack. There might be a kilobyte charge for usage if you don't have a PAM acct.. Won't know for sure if it is unlimited until your next billing cycle. Technically, it should appear as 'in-phone' unlimited use but no one knows for sure yet. |

| Sprint is pretty useless. They never told me my PAM plan hadn't been activated, though when I activated my phone the tech assured me that it would work. Finally, after actually adding the PAM plan, I got the 700p to work via Bluetooth. Not sure if I'm going to try the tethered hack approach though it's intriguing. |

I had started a separate post for this, as I thought this discussion was weighed to much towards the Sprint service. However, I'm more than happy to post this hear instead:
*********************************************
Notes:
1. I'm new, so please bear with me!
2. I just upgraded from a Treo 650 to a Treo 700P
3. I use VERIZON (most of the discussion I've found so far deals primarily with Sprint).
4. I have a MacBook PRO (OS X - fully up to date)
I upgraded the phone specifically so I could connect my MacBook PRO to the Internet using my National Access / Broadband connection (which I have subscribed to for some time for simple email checking with my 650). I checked (as many did) with both Palm and Verizon before buying the Phone, which I paid top dollar for, and BOTH said "No problem." BS.
So, I tried. I tried again. I used the silly "VZ-Access" Manager application. I used Mac's Internet Connect. Nope. So, I did the next logical thing and called Verizon. "We're sorry, the 700P will not work with macs." I said, "Not even in Bluetooth mode?" They said, "nope, not at all". I calmed down, explained that I had been told that it would work. He was attempting to be very helpful, but he was a Windows guy and the Mac guys were all busy and stayed that way for 30 minutes or so. In the meantime, we tried many things. Nothing. He then called Palm and bridged the call. "We're sorry, but the Treo 700P does not work with Macintosh." WHAT????? "Sir, you can try an app called Wirelessmodem and see if it works? Huh? "You suggest I go to someone else for software to make something work that you produce and then market as a working device?" Palm said, "Yes sir. That's what you have to do." Well, that app did nothing. I mean nothing and there is little or no support for it. By the way, I'm okay around Macs but I'm not an expert - far from it.
I am not kidding with the following statement: This has to work!
I get to the point where it "appears" to connect to the network, and then tries to authenticate, then it says "failed" and that's that.
I'm open for anything here. My email address is MacBookBob@gmail.com in case someone wants to try and work with me that way. Please? This cannot be the case - is it?
Thanks for bearing with me...
Bob

UPDATE:
I've spent more "quality" time on the phone with Palm and spoke to the omnipresent "Level 2" Support Person. Yes, I am feeling so much love now.
IN any case: Go to kb.palm.com
Enter in the Solution ID field: 16748
The next page is stupid, and tells you what you know, that the VZAccess manager will not work (yet). However, if you look, you will find:
"So how do I use my Treo smartphone as a wireless modem for my Mac (BroadbandAccess Connect)?
Although the VZAccess Manager software is not yet available, you can enable Bluetooth DUN on your portable manually. Click here to learn how to manually set up Bluetooth DUN."
When you click the word "here" above (not here, but at the site, don't get too confused), you will at least get instructions on manually setting this up. It still doesn't work, but you feel so much better.
Next call, Verizon. I will ask: So, when are YOU going to make this work?

UPDATE #2:
Verizon has "no time frame" for upgrading the VZAccess software to work for the 700P on the Mac.
I have a headache. Be that as it may, I have the capability of "dual booting" my MacBook PRO and running Windows on the 2nd Partition. I may try running my Palm through there. But it will be the weekend before I try that.
Needless to say, this is really frustrating. On a positive note - there is clearly a major increase in the signal strength of the phone as compared to the 650. Sitting at my desk in my office, I used to barely get a single "bar" on the "meter". Now, I get three, sometimes four. Amazing...

Care to share with us (well, ok, me) how you managed this? I cannot get my Treo 700p to connect for my MacBook via Bluetooth. For that matter, I haven't even gotten it to sync yet. Thanks. |

Update 3:
FYI: I run the Parallels Virtual Machine code on my Intel MacBook PRO. While trhying to fall asleep last night (of course, not in the daytime!) it dawned on mae that I MIGHT be able to get this whole thing to work via the "Windows XP" running in Paralles. If you are unfamiliar with this application, it is currently Release Code 2, and what it does is (at some very deep level of the Mac Kernal) it runs as a "Virtual Machine" which allows you to load up a variety of OS's such as XP, Linux, et al. I love it. It is extremely fast. I market a product that is XP only, so it really helps to be able to do this. Bottom line, it didn't work! The USB port reports that it is "busy" (which might be because I'm using an external keyboard - hmmmm... I might try it again and unplug the damn thing!) More later....

Aha, I am going to do that as well for a different reason. I did discover something called "usbmodem" at http://mobile-stream.com/usbmodem.html and am working on getting that working. It has issues but looks promising. It claims to allow USB tethering of Treo 700p to OS X just like I (and you) want. Getting there... when I have success, I'll post how. |
