| Quote: | Sprint and Alltel to Announce 10-Year Roaming-Service Deal
Sprint Nextel Corp and Alltel are about to announce a 10-yaer roaming service deal that would expand their coverage areas.
This deal is Sprint's first major roaming agreement for broadband service.
Sprint says its broadband-access service currently covers more than 150 million consumers in 220 communities and will be available to 190 million consumers by year end. Verizon Wireless has made its broadband service available to 154 million consumers, a spokesman said
Verizon has had 1X roaming with AllTel for some time now, and we expect Verizon to follow with similar agreements. |
Update Posted July 10, 2006
| Quote: | "Does the agreement with Alltel mean that we will have data roaming coverage July 1?
No. July 1 is ONLY the effective date of the contract. Sprint/Nextel is working through the data roaming implementation process with Alltel and other roaming partners to provide data roaming coverage. 1xRTT data roaming coverage is expected to be delivered sometime in 3Q06. Delivery of EVDO data roaming coverage is still TBD." |
It doesn't look like it happened OR that EVDO Roaming will happen anytime soon _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier

Wow, wouldn't have seen that coming. I could see why they'd agree to do 1xRTT roaming but EVDO roaming is a surprise since Sprint already has EVDO in all markets that Alltel is in.

The quote also indicates that Verizon does not have EVDO agreements (as someone else posted they do) but rather 1xRTT only for the time being.
I wonder if Alltel is planning an EVDO rollout in markets that Sprint has affiliate conflicts, iPCS in particular. If anything, this will help Sprint users in rural areas to get more 1xRTT coverage. Alltel users get a huge boost for EVDO.
Alltel is suddenly a major player in both voice and data, especially if there are price or TOS advantages. |

Sprint's press release...
| Quote: | Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced a renewal and expansion of a reciprocal nationwide roaming agreement with Alltel that enhances customer access to each other's wireless networks. The new 10-year agreement is effective July 1, 2006, and encompasses CDMA voice, data and EV-DO high-speed mobile data services.
"The new agreement expands our current voice and data roaming relationship while providing customers greater access to services in more places," said Len Lauer, chief operating officer for Sprint. "Our technology alignment ensures an improved seamless roaming experience for text messaging, call/messaging notification and mobile broadband services."
The Sprint PCS nationwide network has grown to become one of the nation's largest all-digital wireless networks covering over 250 million people, including affiliates. The high-speed Sprint Power VisionSM network is the nation's largest with coverage for over 150 million people in 220 communities and 470 airports across the country. By the end of the year, the Alltel deal is expected to significantly increase the area where Sprint customers can use their Sprint Power Vision services. No other carrier has a more powerful network in terms of delivering services and products to its customers. |
So apparently Alltel will be adding EVDO in areas that Sprint does not plan to. This still appears to be a much bigger advantage for Alltel than for Sprint, unless something else is going on... like merger/buyout discussions? |

No merger or Buyout here . Like I have been trying to tell people for a while now . Lookout for Alltel . They have a EVDO agreement in place with Verizon as well , just not announced yet. They are also trying to purchase another major carrier that begins with T !!! |

PCSIntel has a few details...
| Quote: | Sprint today took the wraps off of their new data roaming offerings. PCS Intel first reported on data roaming additions in prior PRL updates, but today Sprint confirmed that data roaming would become a major offering off-network.
Alltel and Sprint have entered into a 10-year agreement to offer shared network services across both their networks. While this will save Sprint and Alltel on voice roaming, it also will offer Sprint and Alltel customers access to each other's network 3G services, including EV-DO.
Sprint data roaming will be available at no additional charge over existing data rates, however, many Sprint customers will have to purchase new phones, as prior devices have been programmed to not anticipate data roaming. Most current phones have a debug toggle option to enable data roaming, which while disabled in-firmware, could be turned on via a firmware over-the-air (FOTA) update.
The agreement between the two carriers will take effect July 1st. This development will also pave the way for Sprint to potentially deploy international data roaming, similar to Verizon Wireless, in the near future. |

| I knew there was a reason why the most recent update added roaming capabilities. Of course when I called, tech support had no idea why. Now we know! This is awesome! Now I can roam out in the middle of nowhere! YAY! |

Not until July 1, 2006
Also, when you are in the middle of nowhere, you will get 1xRTT vs. EVDO. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

It's an analyst guessing. That will not happen . Like I said Alltel is poised to grab another major carrier that starts with a T. As for Sprint - here is the skinny from a good source on the inside . There is alot of spectrum being auctioned off this year . By merging Sprint and Nextel they had a much better shot at these Auctions. As soon as they get the additional spectrum they are looking for. Look for Sprint and Nextel to Split again . There is no way to combine IDEN and CDMA frequencies. They are two different Languges . The merger was all about grabbing more spectrum. |

iDEN = Nextel = instant push to talk. Extremely slow data, TXT messages arrive 2-3 days later. Completelyt different technology, functions in 800mhz spectrum
CDMA = Sprint, Verizon, Alltell, etc. Code Division Multiple Access = 3G technology, provides high speed data capabilities, slower push to talk. Operates in 800mhz and 1900mhz.
CDMA = better choice for data, and to some extent, voice.
iDEN, good for instant "walkie-talkie" communications. Terrible for just about anything else. |

My take.... iDen and possibly even CDMA will likely start to be transitioned in 4-5 years to VoIP over some 4G network. iDen will apparently have no more investment after 2010 as things transition to VoIP. In the short term, there will be dual mode iDen/CDMA phones to transition Nextel users to CDMA and/or nextgen. CDMA users then will be transitioned to VoIP over nextgen later, possibly no more CDMA or iDen network in 10 years or more. CDMA overlay will likely last longer than iDen, whether 10 or 20 years for CDMA, even Sprint probably does not know yet.
But Michael is picky about things off topic... back to roaming. |
