Hello, I am attempting to create the best EVDO setup that I can and am looking for some opinions...
My goal is to have an OQO handtop connected (tethered) via bluetooth to an EVDO cell phone in my pocket and connect to the internet via EVDO. I’d like to do all types of stuff on the internet including VOIP through my OQO.
I’ve been reading up on all of this but am getting conflicting views.
When I went into Verizon they told me that I could not use EVDO through bluetooth (phone as modem) because the bluetooth profile of all their phones didn’t support it.
I believe that I’ve read threads where people were connecting to EVDO through bluetooth (phone as modem) but maybe it was with another carrier and maybe they had to pay per kb?
Is it possible to connect to EVDO through bluetooth (phone as modem)? What carriers can I achieve this with? Do I have to pay per kb or can I pay a flat fee for unlimited data use?
Even if it is possible would the latency from bluetooth make VOIP too painful?
If I was willing to tether using a USB cable (phone as modem) would that open me up to using additional carriers, get better rate on data, faster EVDO connection than bluetooth?
I could probably get around all of this by purchasing a EVDO pc card + Kyocera KR1 router and putting it in my car’s trunk. But at times when I go into large buildings I will probably be too far away to connect via wifi. I could buy a multiple Watt 2.4 GHz amplifier but am skeptical whether or not it would always reach through large buildings. That is why if I could connect with my OQO to my cell phone for EVDO then it wouldn’t matter where it was.
Opinions about these things? |
