I'm jumping into this thread late, but is your intrepretation of the contract that ANY online gaming is grounds for termination? My son has this online StarWars game and I'm scared it's going to get us nuked. Thanks - Mark _________________ Jibby-jib ! |

I'm probably bordering on the stupid capped out ammount. I guess one day when they pop me off and I get a letter I finally went over. Its absolutely ridiculous because when I got my aircard I asked if it was unlimited and were there any catches.
Oh well, hopefully Sprint will work here for me so I have a plan B. |

From what I have read others post (and my own useage seems to be the same) WoW, Everquest, etc uses about 5 megs an hour. That is upload and download combined.
If you play 4 hours a night every day of the month it would be 600 megs. |

Well I have had mine for about 6 months now, and just last month I used over 200GB of traffic (or so they said on my statement) and they have yet to cut me off, despite I download a few hundred GB a month.
So I think they changed the unlimited to really unlimited... |

Have you experienced any bandwidth throttling? I heard that Verizon changed their policy from "5GB and we cut you off" to "5GB and we throttle you down to about 25KB/sec download speeds". I guess it's on a per incident basis, if so. |

| Well if he's downloading 200G there's no way he's being throttled because he wouldn't have gotten then. |

| I have not noticed any throttling on upload or download. Just did a speed test and got 1.3Mb down .9Mb up, a bit low on the upload but pretty close to the norm. |

Yeah, something makes me think that they have just discontinued cutting people off for high data usage. I have a friend in southern California that has had his Verizon data card for about 8 months now and has been using 15 to 20 gigs per month and has not been throttled, no letter of termination, calls, or anything of the sort. |

I've got several users with cards and/or smartphones like the 6700/6800. these people are all using between 10-20 gigs of data and they are just users getting there email and pretty much nothing else...
So the amount of data that the ave user is using up may be a lot higher then you think. |

I'm seeing throttling here. And I'm not sure if I've even breached the 5GB limit on transfers. This area was only recently updated to broadband speeds. I've gotten speedtests over 1MB, but averages 550K to 650K. I've noticed sometimes however that it seems like I can't break 18k/s on some of my transfers. For instance, right now I'm trying to update a game I just bought(Tabula Rasa). The update is downloading at only 16k/s(hello 10 hour update). However, I ran a speed test WITH the update running and still got a speed test result of 350k. That would seem to indicate to me that Verizon is doing traffic shaping now instead of just throttling people. It looks like I've still got a pretty normal connection, but some applications are being selectively gimped. For instance, I can't break 20k/s on a bittorrent, but if I download some music videos on frostwire I can break 100k/s.
Luckily a new wireless broadband provider is moving into this area. I'm trying to get into the beta test group. Hopefully they will provide a superior alternative to Verizon Wireless and their dubious business practices. |

There is more to dl speed than your carrier. The bittorent feed may be throttles by the server serving the files and same with the game update. _________________ -= Frank =- |

It's not just bittorrents. I believe I mentioned that in my first post. I've noticed speed "caps" in various p2p apps and non p2p apps. Also I don't think it's an issue on the other end of the connection simply because when I see odd download speeds they always seem to max out at the 20k/s level. But then I can do a speedtest and 800kbps+ result or download a file in a different application and get 100k/s speed. It looks to me that Verizon is performing traffic shaping which if I'm not mistaken is illegal due to net neutrality. And even if it's not technically illegal, it's damn shady IMO. Either way, whether they are just capping people or if they are doing traffic shaping, I'll be dumping these turkeys once I have a viable alternative.
If they want to run a shady business, they don't deserve my $$$. |

It might be that they are traffic shaping, but you should be able to find out for sure. I would try an ftp transfer when you are seeing these "throttling" incidents. Port 21 is a likely candidate for scrutiny. Also, HTTPS traffic is targeted. My experience, especially for game or software updates is that the host servers are crowded - Tabula Rasa is really hot right now and everybody might be trying to update at once.
The satellite Internet providers have been shaping for years with no legal backlash. It's a sorry fact of the state of last-mile broadband in this country. _________________ Further... |
