I have been testing my KR1 on the road. So far it works pretty well except for one problem. If I am in an area with no signal for any length of time the router resets. This is not a good thing since I use the router as my LAN and have several devices using the WiFi connection. When it resets my local traffic gets clobbered.
Has anyone else discovered this problem? I did do a quick search but did not find anything on this particular problem.

Does the status LED turn red, and does it take several (15 or so) minutes to reset?

I'm rarely outside of coverage, but did notice it will eventually reset, but that would be after a fairly long time, and only if the connection could not be made out of bootup.

After a couple minutes (5 maybe) of no signal, all the lights on the router; power, status, WAN, WLAN come on for about 30 seconds and then the status and WAN lights go out until I come in range again. The all lights thing is what happens when it is first powered on, so I am assuming the router is booting.

This is actually done by design. When the router loses its connection it will attempt to reconnect three or four times. If it is not successful it will reboot itself in attempt to clear up any possible bad states it has gotten itself into.

I had a feeling that was coming. How can we turn that off? or can we turn up the number of times it attemps before it resets? or how can we tell it to just reset the WAN side? this is not good! help!

I did a search but did not come up with any new information on this subject. I am hoping now to get an idea of how this problem may be resolved. Perhaps more importantly, will it be resolved?

The device is a wireless hub/router. It has four ethernet ports and a 802.11x wireless radio. The device is designed to network multiple computers and network devices together to share a routed connection to a network (such as the internet). To have the whole unit recycle on the loss of a signal on the external interface is obserd (sorry). I know of no other hub/router/modem/bridge device that does this.

To remedy the situation I would need to purchase another wiress router or bridge so the local network would stay up during a loss of signal on the outside interface. This defeats the purpose of bringing these two devices together. I would have been better served to have purchased an EVDO bridge and connected it to a standard wireless router.

Please do not misunderstand this post. I am a fan of Kyocera and applaud their efforts to produce a integrated unit that most people can afford. However, for this product to be seen as a "mobile" or "portable" Internet Hotspot, you must remove the logic that resets the whole router with the logic that will just reset the outside interface or more specifically the EVDO bridge (doesn't it need this logic to transition from a 1X network to an EVDO network anyway).

Also, please give some thought to how this behavior effects Network Attached Storage, Media Sharing and plain old file and print sharing. Home networks are becoming very popular ... enough said ...

Kyocera,

Since the Kyocera KR1 is a Mobile Router, we have had many reports from users who are having a problem with this feature of the KR1. They are using the Mobile Router as an actual router and when the router is Reset (because of 15 minutes of inactivity), they lose all network connections.

We have a user that might want to use the KR1 in thousands of vehicles and this is a drop dead problem. Please let us know if the next firmware will have something like this:

Code:
[X] Check for EVDO/1XRTT Signal
If Signal Lost for [xx] Minutes, Do the following:
       [] Reset WWAN Connection
       [] Reboot Router

The three events, broadband card, wifi and ethernet should stay live independent of the other two.

The broadband card requires wifi or ethernet but wifi and ethernet can function within their own realm with no contact from the broadband card.

I returned my KR1 for exactly this reason and advised my client to not purchase any of them after our trial showed they were unstable while mobile. Sorta defeats the purpose of a mobile router.

This issue only affects a small number of mobile users, probably doesn't affect 98% of KR1 users. Many of our customers use the KR1 in a vehicle (Car, Bus, Truck, Coach, Boat, etc.), without problem.

If you are using the KR1 and hooking up via WiFi, this issue doesn't affect you. If you are hooking up other network devices (file servers) to the KR1 and you want to access these servers WHILE the KR1 is in a no coverage area, you will experience problems while the KR1 resets and you lose network connection. Again, if you are just using the KR1 without hooking up a fileserver to the KR1, it doesn't matter that you are in a no coverage area.

You could do a Crash Recovery reset if this happens.

Press on the reset button of the router for 10 seconds then unplug the power cable while still pressing on the reset button. Wait for another 10 seconds then plug back in the power cable and and then wait for another 10 seconds then release the reset button.

Are there plans to address this issue of reseting the entire system?

My frustration level with this issue was getting out of control....

As I contemplated what to do, I noticed that I would typically lose my WAN connection when I activated WLAN traffic. I therefore turned on the wireless feature and the problem has been reduced SIGNIFICANTLY.

Not sure what is happening other then I am in a weak signal area, typically less than 5 out of 10 bars, and removing the interference from the WLAN helps....

Same issue here ...

KPC650(Alltel)
KR1 (RK1007 Firmware)
Arc Wireless Antenna (from booster-antenna.com)

Home installation (stationary)
Signal 5-6 (out of 10)
UPnP Off
WLAN Off

KPC650 seems to be switching between EVDO and 1xRTT occasionally

Neither Alltel nor Kyocera can tell me how to lock the card to EVDO (ignore 1xRTT) or even if this could cause my (our) problem.

Any thoughts ???

I'm putting together a similar system:

Alltel service
KPC650
KR1
Wilson Trucker
Wilson 3W amp
etc.

This system will be stationary. Prelim testing shows that I get 85%+ signal strength (~500K down/60K up)

From what I understand reading this thread - if my EVDO signal switches over to 1x for some reason (which I have seen happen on my mobile phone periodically), my new KR1 (which I haven't installed yet) will reboot and take out my whole network.

This is not acceptable. What are my options? I can't find any reports of the new Linksys router working with the KPC650. I wish it did - I really like Linksys stuff.

Are there any pure EVDO bridges out there? I've come across lots of roll-your-own and I <could> do that but I'd rather just buy a solution. Ideally something the PCMCIA could plug into which would then feed into the WAN port on one of the several WRT54Gs that I have lying around.

The pyramid-shaped router (can't remember the name) seems to get good reviews but I've never heard of the company, and there's no presence on this board - so it may have similar issues for all I know, just not reported.
