Yes and no. The problem is the US and Europe use two completely different technologies (for the most part), The only provider that works in both Europe and here is Tmobile. They do not offer any data solutions, however, if you get a quad band phone (a phone that is capable of working on 1900mhz and 800mhz here in the US, and 900 and 1800mhz in Europe), you can send and receive calls. You will need an international voice plan though. Vodaphone and Verizon are the same parent company, however, they are not interchangeably between the continents. For voice to work overseas, either go with TMo, or get a prepaid SIM card to use with TMO or a Cingular hand set. Europe uses GSM in most countries. Vodaphone, and a few other countries and providers use WCDMA, which is not compatible with CDMA here in the states. Bottom line, for voice, go with TMO, for data, I really cannot help you there. If I remember TMO has data capabilities (HSDPA) in Europe, but none here in the states. So maybe he should keep his Verizon EVDO service for the states, and use TMO over seas. Another better place to ask this type of question would be over at HowardForums. They have a little more experience in the different areas relating to this. However, I do hoep somebody else can comment and help you on this situation here.

I wish you the best of luck!

There doesn't exist any handset that meets all those criteria -- that does both voice and data in both the U.S. and Europe. However, Sprint and Verizon do offer so-called world-phones that can operate on both CDMA networks and GSM networks for voice. They may also be able to handle e-mail on both CDMA and GSM. Check Sprint and Verizon Wireless' websites for more information.

Cingular 8125 will do everything he wants in Europe and the US but data is limited to EDGE(very similar to Verizon National Access/Sprint PCS Vision 1XRTT), however it is WiFi capable so that's also an option for high speed data access here or in Europe.

I think you are looking at t-Mobile and a Palm OS Treo. I get it that it is not windows but I'm not sure that is a negative. I've had both palm and windows Treo units. I use a Verizon 700W now but went to Thailand last year with a T-Mobile Palm OS Treao 650 and had no problems getting email, SMS messages, internet or voice. T-mobile did not list a 650 in their system but it worked fine and they gave me a list of several foreign networks to connect to manually if needed but the phone switched networks as I moved around the country.

I would expect the same services in Europe. (BTW; I'm thiinking about switching back to the Palm OS since It seemed to be more versatile.)

What about the new Sprint Blackberry - http://www.sprintenterprise.com/8830/ - it will be available in July and Sprint is allowing the use of non-Sprint sim cards. Check it out. - sheureka
