Curious if anyone has played with VOIP service using the Kyocera router.
I have been trying this with the KR1, Sprint service with a S620 card, and a Linksys PAP2 VOIP adapter via Broadvoice.
So far, not much success. At one point I had partial success, phone would ring on an incoming call (but couldn't be answered), attempted outgoing calls gave me a fast busy. Now however I can't even get that far, no 'phone' LED lit on the PAP2. If I unplug the network cable from the KR1 and connect it to my normal LAN it works fine.
It may be a signal strength issue. Unfortunately I mangled my antenna adapter so I can't use an antenna until a new one arrives. I tried putting the PAP2 on DMZ but no change.

I tested a Cisco IP Phone 7940 with the KR1 and it wouldn't work with the KR1 (it uses the same protocol that VPNs use).
I plugged the same phone into a MB6000 and it worked for both sending and receiving VOIP calls. ONLY problem was latency. EVDO Rev 0 has high latency, so you are going to have 2-3 second delays, and that makes having a call hard.
EVDO Rev A will have much lower latency and that will technically allow VOIP to actually work. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| FYI - I use Skype occassionally with the KR1 and it works fine. Rarely there is a short dropout but the latency is no worse than a normal cell phone. |

| Inbound data is much more consistent than outbound. So, you will hear people fine, they will not hear you as well. |

I have used VOIP over the KR1 and it works for about 45 seconds then it locks up the KR1 which needs rebooting after.
Hopefully someone has a work around or a new BIOS will come out to fix that. I did find that port forwarding ports 5060 - 5080 and 10,000 - 20,000 to the SIP phone helps a little. |

I've run an Asterisk VoIP server behind a KR-1 for about four months now, with minimal problems. I've made hundreds of calls up to an hour in length with maybe 3-4 cutoffs at most in that tie.
The only issues I've had are down to the router going through one of its 'resetting' moments (thankfully few and far between since upgrading to RK1010).
BTW, I'm on Sprint RevA - speed roughly 512/384, signal ~-89dBm - I did try it in a Rev0 area, and the increased latency completely killed any VoIP sessions. So, if you're in a RevA area, give it a go - otherwise you may be out of luck! |
