Had a 100% signal today so I didn't hook up my Arc antenna; noticed my connection was slow and saw I was on National Access. Turned off the Dormaint Killer and after a minute was back in Broadband. Did this three times and hooked up my Arc Antenna - never left broadband. Did get disconected once, but after reconnecting it stayed up as long as I needed it.
So even with a 100% EVDO signal - an antenna can be of use.
Was actually hoping not to have a 100% signal to test the Arc -vs- Wilson antennas, but the signal around Universal Studios in Orlando is damn strong! |

Something very strange has happened, I have started to get only National Access around 10:30PM tonight even with the Arc antenna plugged in, but when I plug in the Wilson Dual Band/Tri Mode I get broadband access again. With or without the antennas I am at 100% - seconds after unplugging the Arc and plugging in the Wilson I do get broadband.
If I unplug the Wilson I go to Nationwide and stay there, plug in the Arc and go dormant and when I access a website stay at nationwide. Plug in the Wilson and go dormant I get Broadband once again.
Anyone know if the Cell Towers can change strength? I can't figure out how being on the same place for hours with broadband and then for no reason I go to Nationwide... just sitting in a hotel room. The Wilson getting the broadband signal is even more perplexing. |

Your reduced performance at night is hard to explain. It is more common to see signal improve at night. Let's start with 'breathing.' As the number of callers on a cell site increases, the 'noise floor' increases, the power output of the cell site is automatically reduced. As the noise floor decreases the power returns to baseline. This is commonly refered to as 'breathing.' So during the day at peak hours, the observed signal strength is reduced.
Additionally atmospheric conditions will affect signal propagation, and as the sun below the horizon, a major source of rf noise dissapates.
My nigttime EVDO experience is the opposite of yours. Normally during the day, my laptop with AVX PC5220 reports 'no service' in and around my home. However at night I see two bars and the EVDO indicator lit up.
Right now it's 12:32 PST and I am posting via EVDO from my laptop on the kitchen counter. Tomorrow morning it we'll be back to 'no service.'
I'm not sure why you have different responses to the use of different antennas. Parked right outside a vzw cell site I have had peculilar reception issues. When using the Sierra Wireless AirCard I have experienced 'no service' when using the antenna with the extension, and then service was restored when just using the extension cable without the antenna mast. I attribute this to the signal from the cell site 'overdriving' the 'front end' of the receiver on the AirCard.
Still unplugged.........posting from the kitchen counter via EVDO
