|
|
Currently, there are 2 types of Data card formats available:
- PCMCIA (or PC Slot) - this is the PC Slot that is in most laptops before 2006 (and even still in many). Some popular laptops don't have a PC Slot (iBook or PowerBook 12 inch).
- ExpressCard - this is a new format that just started coming out in 2006 and at some point, it will be the primary connection. By 2007, 70% of laptops will have ExpressCards and not PC Slots.
So, if you have a new laptop, FIND OUT if it has a PC Slot or an ExpressCard (BTW, ExpressCard comes in two different sizes 34mm or 54mm sizes, most laptops use the ExpressCard/34 size).
So before buying, if you get a new laptop, be sure, do not purchase a PC Card, it will not fit or work.
ExpressCards are not yet available (as of the April 13, 2006), but should be in the May/June 2006 time frame (here is more info on the Novatel ExpressCard ). We have an ExpressCard Notification thread, get an email as soon as ExpressCards are shipping.
