I am trying to find out if it is possible to just install a distribution of Linux and plug in an EVDO card and go. Fedora 5? Suse?

Simple Answer, NO.

The problem relates to the cards sold being non-compliant with
the USB specifacation and recent breakage of several drivers
has made things worse.

It can be made to run, but you have patch usbserial, and
write custom scripts to work around the problem. The biggest
mistake I've seen is that Verizon and likely Sprint will not
turn on LCP_ECHO unless you send CLIENT right after you
see the CONNECT in the script. I've been running for upwards
of 16 hours with no drops and sporadic normal usage. Takes
about 1.5 seconds for the link to come up. This is a Microsoft
bug in how they implemented their PPP client for Windows.

In the case of the v620 and s620, the normal kernel driver
is broken. Do not include it, or your system may kernel
freeze.

Chris

PS> I'm downloading 20KB/s - 90KB/s on files of upto 85MB
at a time. Without the LCP_ECHO being set to virtually off.

I didn't have to change any drivers. I followed the ka9q instructions (search google) for ka9q and 5220 for dialing scripts, but ignored the driver changes.

I have difficulty believing that things have been broken in FC5 eventhough they worked without issue for me in FC4. Granted, I had a 5220, not one of the newer cards.

Distro doesn't really matter when it's the kernel that causes the issue.
airprime.c does not work for the v620 and if you don't patch usbserial
the link dies on the first major transfer. Light browsing won't cause
a problem, only big transfers. The part about LCP_ECHO relates to
a recent finding by someone who got a software program to monitor
what was actually being sent from Microsoft RAS to Verizon.
