Something new from Google may be a big benefit to us EVDO'rs (running Windows XP or 2000).

Google Web Accelerator is a local proxy that gets installed on your computer and adds an inteligent proxy on your local computer. It promises to speed up access, by caching requested files and adding more Google magic.

So, if you are using it, post your comments here and let everyone know how it is working for you.

This is beta software, so if you are doing mission critical stuff - maybe you shouldn't install right away

I have done some additional testing, and this works real well. It is even working great on 1xRTT (NationalAccess).

The interface is clean and simple. It can easily be disabled. You can specify domains not to acclerate (database driven ones, etc.). A simple interface at the top of the browser, tells you many seconds you have saved by using the accelerator.

I look forward to other comments from those who have installed this.

Are there any pros/cons for using this with Venturi?

Many do not like Venturi, as it causes problems for some, search the forums for Venturi to get other comments on it.

The Google Web Accelerator has more to do with caching vs. compressing. If you are always going to CNN throughout the day, why not have certain graphics cached and if GWA senses that you go to CNN all the time, it can 'pre-load' the page waiting for your request.

I have been using it without problem (it is cool).

I did see the following related story and how the Google Web Accelerator was causing some problems for users who need to log into web sites.

An update. I have been using Google Web Accelerator and it works great. This week it has saved me 17.4 minutes (according to GWA). I came across this article on how some web masters are blocking access for those using the Google Web Accelerator:

It looks like that the Google Web Accelerator is no longer available for new users to download.

We will post a message to this thread when it becomes available again.
