Both Sprint and Verizon have announced that they will be selling Rev A (evdo on steroids) aircards by about the 3rd quarter of THIS year.
Will the KR1, in its present form being presently sold, work with Rev A aircards?
I doubt it.
But does anyone know for sure?

On the KR1 spec sheet, one of the highlights listed is:
"Smooth migration to future 1xEV-DO releases"
One would assume that this would mean support for the Rev A cards in the future. |

Kewl! Thanks...and, by the way, does anybody know how long a battery charge on this lasts?
What I'm thinking of doing is taking an oQo, seeing that it doesn't have a PCMCIA slot, and carrying around a KR1 in my pocket (I've got big pockets) so that I have a "wi fi" around me at all times in coverage areas and can use the pcmcia-cardless oQo that way.
I realize that you can bluetooth it over via a cell phone but I hate that because you usually get so much speed degradation. Plus I've heard that the KR1 REALLY sucks up all the available evdo speed better than anything else out there, closest thing there is to sitting on the tower, etc.
Comments? anybody? |

| You could tether to a phone via USB as well. Don't know when Rev A phones will be announced though. I wouldn't expect them til next year. |

Sprint and Verizon have both announced that Rev A *aircards* will be available in the 3rd quarter 2006.
I was in my local V store the other day, and a rep there told me that Verizon would have Rev A *aircards* in only 3 months.

Any 12v car battery supply works, and the KR1 includes what may be the best power adapter I've seen for the application. It isn't "mobile" in the sense of having a battery, but I've added a battery pack without any problem (there is an entire thread on remote power for the KR1).
The KR1 is very lightweight and that wouldn't be true if it had a battery.
If you need to be that mobile, I think they would assume you would just plug in the EVDO card into the laptop.
The KR1 should not care as long as the RevA evdo cards act like the current ones - having a USB serial port architecture and using ATD#777 to dial and set up a PPP connection. |

The oqo as well as the cPC DualCor and all of the Origiami UMPCs coming out by Samsung, Asus, Founder et al, NONE of these devices are large enough to have a pcmcia card slot.

And I have a Sharp Zaurus which is about the same size. Unless there is a CF EVDO adapter I can't use EVDO (or one that can work with a CF-PCMCIA connector). However the KR1 is several times bigger than my Zaurus, and I wouldn't consider the collection of the two (although for now, since I'm doing gps testing and such they are velcroed together) as "mobile".
Lugging around a not-small network box so you can use a PDA sized PC doesn't seem to be a good application, and you can add an external battery pack (I have that too). |

Righto. Just saying Rev A phones will probably follow later. When EVDO first came, the cards appeared well before DO phones. |
