Nortel, Sierra Wireless Achieve Industry's First EV-DO Revision A Mobile Calls

Pre-Commercial Data Devices Carry EV-DO Rev A Communications

VANCOUVER, March 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Nortel(x) (NYSE/TSX: NT) and Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) have achieved a significant technology milestone needed to power wireless services such as push-to-talk, push-to-video, VoIP and interactive gaming at speeds much faster than available today.

The two companies achieved the industry's first over the air test calls using EV-DO Revision A wireless technology and pre-commercial wireless data devices. The successful tests confirm the commercial viability of EV-DO Revision A for powering next-generation broadband wireless services.

"The ability for operators to deliver new, revenue-generating services with increased network intelligence enabled by EV-DO Revision A will provide a powerful competitive advantage," said Doug Wolff, vice president and general manager, CDMA, Nortel. "The successful tests are the latest step in Nortel's aggressive EV-DO strategy to deliver cost-effective, high-bandwidth capabilities for wireless operations."

"Joint interoperability testing, particularly with new network technologies like EV-DO Revision A, enables wireless operators to assess the quality and reliability of new technologies," said Jim Kirkpatrick, chief technology officer for Sierra Wireless. "We are pleased to collaborate with Nortel to lead the market in enabling advanced EV-DO Revision A wireless solutions for our customers."

The companies completed over the air tests using Sierra Wireless AirCard® 595 wide area wireless network cards, Sierra Wireless MC5725 PCI Express Mini Card embedded modules, and EV-DO Revision A equipment from Nortel. EV-DO Revision A technology will offer significant performance improvements to both the uplink and the downlink speeds compared to current EV-DO (Release 0) networks. EV-DO Revision A enables peak data rates of up to 3.1 Mbps on the downlink and 1.8 Mbps on the uplink.

Nortel has provided EV-DO equipment to 18 of the 29 operators worldwide including Verizon Wireless and Sprint in the United States, VIVO in Brazil, Pelephone in Israel and Eurotel in the Czech Republic. Nortel's CDMA equipment is designed to support EV-DO through modular upgrades to existing hardware, re-using existing base station to help operators reduce or eliminate the need for costly hardware replacements.

The AirCard 595 wireless wide area network card and the MC5725 Mini Card embedded module are Sierra Wireless's first products for EV-DO Revision A networks and are scheduled for commercial release later this year, bringing the company's EV-DO product portfolio to five devices since launching the industry's first EV-DO PC cards in 2003. Both products are fully compatible with current EV-DO and CDMA 1X networks, for use in areas where an EV-DO Revision A network is not available.

With more info solidifying that Rev A is coming soon, I wonder if it makes sense to buy laptops with embedded EVDO Rev 0?

Buying Rev0 phones now is also a tough call if you plan to use phone-as-modem or want VoIP. I have a separate EVDO card for laptop so decided to go ahead and get a Rev0 phone (upcoming Treo 700p) as I would also have a RevA card on laptop. Rev0 will be adequate for the small screen in most cases but RevA phones will of course be necessary for VoIP.

The wait game for upcoming technology can be frustrating. You can wait or get the latest, but will typically be out of date in 6-12 months no matter what you do. Wink

I agree about the embedded EVDO - but for different reasons. It doesn't give the consumer a choice. In some locations Verizon is the way to go, in others, Sprint is. Also, there are certain companies that have contracts with Verizon or Sprint and a whole line of laptops may not be on the "approved" list because it is tied to the wrong carrier.

Perhaps at the CTIA show in a few weeks, we will get a better idea on EVDO Rev A and timing. Even if it was going to start in 6 - 12 months, it will take longer to have it deployed (just look at the Rev0 deployment). So, waiting may not be the smartest, since you will lose being able to gain the benefits of using it now.

The options include:

- Signing up for 1 year vs. 2 year contract (if possible or cost effective. To get the $59.99 rates on either, you have to do a 2 year contract. However, you save $20/month X 12 = $240/year)

- when new equipment/RevA coverage becomes a reality, purchase a new EVDO RevA card and activate it on your existing account (retail price could be $300 - $400 to do this)

- At some point, if RevA is better on "the other carrier" (or not yours), bail out, pay the early penalty and switch.

Also, remember that any B2B discounts can be applied to the $79.99 rate for VZW data plans -- my 17% discount brings the 1-year price down to $66.39 per month. You can check if you are eligible by entering your business e-mail address on VZW's webpage:

https://b2b.verizonwireless.com/tbmb/rylEnterEmailAddress.do

You will receive a e-mail with a link to the discount page for your employer. You can add the discount to an existing line, but you cannot discount the $59.99 2-year discounted plan (which, by the way, also requires an active voice line).

Am I off that Rev 0 could be around for some time offered at roughly today's rates and Rev A could be considered an premium service that will run you let's say twice as much? I don't follow this as close as some of you but nothing that I've seen so far says that's not a possiblity.
