Watch Your Slingbox TV on your Mobile Device

News by Michael Oryl (editor) on Thursday March 23, 2006.

Today Sling Media, makers of the Slingbox, announced the availability of a beta version of SlingPlayer Mobile on their website. For those not familiar with Slingbox, it is a device that you place with your home entertainment devices, such as a TV and Tivo/DVR, that then connects to the internet through your home network so that you can control and watch programming from your home devices from other locations with internet connectivity running the SlingPlayer application, such as your laptop computer. It allows you to watch your own TV from most anywhere in the world, even to the extent of being able to navigate through Tivo or Satellite TV tuner menus.

The new SlingPlayer Mobile application is going into a 1 month public beta. I saw it in action a few months ago running on an EV-DO capable Windows Mobile 5.0 device while in Seattle. It was rather amazing to be watching an episode of Family guy on a Windows Mobile device while driving down the street in a bus. It was all the more amazing when you consider that the episode had been recorded prior and that we had navigated through all of the recorded shows in the Sling Media rep's home Tivo DVR in order to select that particular show.

Starting on April 26th, the SlingPlayer Mobile application will sell for $29.99 and will be available in a 30 day trial form. Current Slingbox owners and new Slingbox purchasers that register before April 26th will be entitled to a free copy of SlingPlayer Mobile. There are no monthly charges associated with the application.

The SlingPlayer Mobile application is currently compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 and Pocket PC 2003 SE devices with touch screens only. Sling Media said they expect a Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone version to be ready in Q2 of this year. A full list of compatible devices and other information is available at the Sling Media website.
