Sierra Wireless introduces product line for next generation EV-DO networks

The AirCard 595 wireless wide area network card and the MC5725 PCI Express Mini Card embedded module will offer increased data rates and faster uploads

VANCOUVER, March 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) today announced the introduction of the company's product line for EV-DO Revision A networks. The AirCard® 595 wireless wide area network card and the MC5725 PCI Express Mini Card embedded module are designed to take advantage of the increased speed and functionality offered on the next-generation EV-DO networks, providing mobile professionals with faster file uploads and the capacity to support multimedia applications such as video streaming or Web conferencing.

"We believe that the benefits Revision A network technology will provide to our customers are a significant step toward the widespread adoption of wireless wide area network connectivity by mobile professionals," said Trent Punnett, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Development for Sierra Wireless. "For that reason, Sierra Wireless is committed to leading the way in bringing EV-DO Revision A devices to market."

EV-DO Revision A is an upgrade to current EV-DO networks that supports faster data rates and increased system capacity, offering peak data rates of 3.1 Mbps on the downlink and up to 1.8 Mbps on the uplink. The faster data rates, particularly on the uplink, will improve the user experience for those who need to send large files such as photos or graphics to colleagues or clients over their wireless data connection.

The AirCard 595, a Type II PC card, is the latest addition to Sierra Wireless's award winning AirCard line of wireless wide area network cards for mobile computing. Scheduled for commercial shipment in the third quarter of 2006, the AirCard 595 will also be fully compatible with current EV-DO networks, as well as CDMA 1X networks, for use in areas where an EV-DO Rev. A network is not available.

Designed to provide an integrated EV-DO Revision A connection for AirCard Enabled(TM) notebook computers and other mobile computing devices, the MC5725 is the newest embedded module from Sierra Wireless, which has more than 10 years' experience in working with original equipment manufacturers to provide built-in wireless wide area network connectivity for a variety of devices and applications. Like the AirCard 595, the MC5725 will be backward compatible to provide seamless connections to current EV-DO and CDMA 1X networks.

Early models of the AirCard 595 and the MC5725 are available to infrastructure vendors, OEM customers, and network operators for testing and integration purposes.

Cool! As soon as RevA cards are available, it may make sense to get these instead of Rev0 cards even if RevA is not available for 6-12 months. The bummer decision now is if I should get the rumored upcoming Treo 700p with Rev0 or wait for RevA phones. Ugh.

Sprint has mentioned RevA will be available to business users early next year and consumers later in 2007. You'd think testing would be sooner than that. Verizon has mentioned RevA testing in late 2006 but has anyone heard when availability is expected?

I agree, it would make sense to get EVDO Rev A cards, even before the network supports them. Kind of like, how Verizon & Sprint were selling EVDO cards before EVDO was up, but they worked in 1xRTT. Sometime this year, you will be able to buy EVDO Rev A cards, which will be compatible with the current EVDO network (Rev 0), BUT, when carriers start upgrading their network to Rev A, your card will not have to be upgraded.

While it's too early to get too worked up about I do wonder how Rev A will be positioned to the end counumer: It's a premium service and will cost you twice a much as a Rev 0 connection? If you have an exising Rev 0 contract will you need to break it and pay early termination fee and then sign up for Rev A anew ? Rev 0 is being phased out and all you need to do is pay for a new Rev A card? Sign up for a new 2 year contract ? Same price? Has any of the carriers leaked any informatin about this ? I doubt it, but we're just wondering right? Very Happy

This isn't a MacBook Pro only issue. There are many other laptops that are in the same boat, no PCMCIA slot:

new MacBook Pro, HP Pavilion dv5000, Dell Inspiron B130/B120, Dell Inspiron 1300, Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi, LifeBook N3511, Toshiba Terca M3.

And the smartest manufacturer, the ThinkPad T32, which has both PCMCIA and ExpressCard!

Don’t forget about the SONY VAIO® VGN-SZ140 Notebook. It also has both PCMCIA and ExpressCard.

it is hard to tell if it is hinged or not. I have a huge tiff file and it is hard to tell.

More news on availability:

Quote:
Sierra states the card is scheduled for commercial shipment in the third quarter, hinting that CDMA carriers may be rolling out their data upgrades before the holiday shopping season in at least some markets.

YAY! That is one sexy card though... mmmmm. I hope Sprint will let me trade-in my 580 and get the 595. Or maybe Michael, you will do something like that?

I ran up the gamma and it looks like a hinge...if it is ... better design. So that way if your hand hits it .... it would knock it down....not break it off:)
