I just noticed this firmware on the Kyocera website. Is this the firmware that ships with the KR1 or is this the new one?
Sorry if this is a repeat topic. |

The image and instructions are at:
http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr1-router/firmware.htm
1. On mine, it doesn't automatically reboot after flashing, so I wait 10 minutes (it takes about 5 minutes to complete) and pull the power for 10 seconds. You will want to wait 10 minutes, because if you reboot before then the router won't come up. So take a note of the time so you can count out 10 minutes. Note the status light will flash rapidly during flashing, so if it reboots it will come back up, or if the image is wrong it will won't start flashing.
2. DO NOT USE THIS UNLESS it fails:
(To avoid the customer service that might take 20 minutes of "did you turn it off and on" type questions - I'm sympathetic that it works for most people, but OTOH at the beginning it is no more intelligent than a "Press 1 if the light is orange..." but it does have a human voice).
There is a recovery page where you can reupload firmware (also suffers from the non-self-reboot problem on mine, so do the 10 minute thing).
If you hold the reset button in when inserting the power cord, and hold it in until the status light flashes, the KR1 will go into a recovery mode which is just a firmware upload page. (The KR1 will have the address 192.168.0.1, and you must manually configure your ethernet card to have something on the same subnet, e.g. 192.168.0.7, then go to http://192.168.0.1/ and you will see a very simple page with a file upload box).
(begin geek analysis of the new image)
The firmware has the same damaged in /dev as the others. I wonder why they don't fix it (/dev/hdb4 and and /dev/hdb9 have been replaced by duplicate (i.e. broken) copies of /dev/hdb1 and /dev/hdb8), or at least clean it up. It still has things like the old samba support files (looks like they started with their di624s tree).
busybox, webs, and the programs handling the ppp connection have all been modified. The diagnostic program (copying the control port of the cards to the serial "diagnostic" connector) has been reenabled. ath_pci - the wireless driver has also been updated.
The release dates are 3/3/2006
I left my router at home, so I can't do more yet. |

Hey TZ,
Thanks for posting the "bringing back your KR1 From Dead" routine.
We have someone here who is diving into the KR1 too and noticed the damaged files (doesn't seem to affect anything). Also, we went the route of hooking up a cable to the internal diagnostic/serial port and communicating with the KR1 that way. We also noticed the debug mode and having that available from a web page, gives people an option to "fix" their routers that have turned into bricks because of a failed Firmware upgrade.
If you want to move your steps into a different message, I will make it a sticky, so it is easy for everyone to find. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I created a new upgrade/unbricking topic with clearer instructions.
And I have a gpsd/telnetd enabled version of the new firmware ready for beta (they made the romfs image bigger!). Those interested should PM me. |

| RK1002 includes a fix for the issue where the GUI dies when hitting the back button in the setup wizard and an issue where a long SSID was used in conjunction with a WPA-PSK key. |
