|
|
I have a theory to offer on the intermittent failure problem I've experienced with two KR1s. I've seen here that some other users have what looks like the identical problem, where the status and WAN lights go dark or, occasionally, the status goes red. Powering off the unit will re-establish service but usually only for a short time. This problem occurs after the unit has been running for a few hours.
I live in a rural area on the edge of an EV-DO coverage area. That means that my V620 probably always runs in its maximum power mode, therefore generating maximum heat and putting a large continuous load on the KR1's power supply. I have a hunch that Kyocera has not tested the KR1 in an environment like mine -- it's probably been tested in Silicon Valley, where the cell service is such that the V620 card never needs more than minimum or near-minimum power.
So two possibilities suggest themselves:
1. The KR1 can't dissipate the heat generated by the V620 running in high power mode, causing some circuit to fail.
2. The KR1's power supply can't continuously supply the high power required to keep the V620 running.
I'll be happy to try some workarounds if Kyocera suggest any.
Any thoughts?

I don't think it is the power supply (both the box and the internal side should be beefy enough to handle a lot).
However, I think you can test the heat theory by putting a room fan so it blows over the KR1/620 to keep it cool. If it works for hours with forced air cooling, and dies shortly after turning the fan off, then the problem is heat. |

I'll give that idea a try. Alternatively, if I can figure out how to open the box, I'll just take the cover off. (The one time I tried to open one of these, I removed the only visible screw from the bottom and found the top still seemed attached somewhere. I ran out of time and stuck the screw back in.)

Is the nearest tower pretty far from where you're running the KR1? |

| The three other screws are under the rubber footpads in the other corners (add warranty violation disclaimer here). |

To be honest, I don't really know where the closest tower is. I am showing full signal strength when I place the phone next to the KR1. We do not have EVDO anywhere close to where we live. _________________ -morpheus- |
