Aircard 580 - Just installed a new update

Just for grins I hit the update software button and something new popped up. It was a 10.3mb download. No, this isn't the update that gave me SMS.

After I installed it I could see no change in software version or the PRL. However, there was a new option when I clicked on device info and diagnostics.

In the lower left corner it said update user data. So, I clicked it and it said that on the status window. Then it said it was reseting the modem.

After it finished I noticed no change in download speed. The only change I noticed is now when I click on the update link...it actually has a box that pops up and says your software is up to date. That is a new one.

Is there an option to lock the card into 1xRTT or EVDO mode now by chance?

I don't believe the AirCard 580 has this ability yet (unless the update today added it). You are thinking of the Merlin S620, that added the feature in the last firmware.

grr when will tey update he PRL for the 580? I checked today and i still have the most recen version of the software. Yes, the 580 has the ability to lock on EVDO or 1xRTT. You just cnt be connected when u try to set this option. I also dont see the option to 'change user data' in the 'Device info and diagnostics' screen.

Yeah, after I clicked that option for user data and it did that ... the option was gone.

I just got the 580 in to demo and if there is an option to lock it in EVDO only then I can't find it.

Hey, to get the card to lock onto EVDO only, make sure ur disconnected. Go into the menu, then go to Settings > Sprint PCS Vision Sierra Wireless, you will see three different options. EVDO 1xRTT or Both. Click the EVDO, hit apply, then try to connect.

I don't mean to sound dumb here but we must be using a different version of software. Here is what my 580 software looks like:

What you describe sounds exactly like what a Merlin s620 looks like. I have tried updating the software but it says no updates are available.

Wait, are you using the Verizon service? That is what is displayed in that picture. If you have Verizon, and that software, there is not much I can help ya with. The version I have of the software is Sprint. It has to be for the 580 because it works! lol. The only thing that doesnt want to update is my PRL. Everybody else seems to be having that issue. You can go to www.sprint.com/downloads and download the Sprint PCS Connection software for the 580. If you have Verizon, dont do the Sprint update lol.

Let me know how it turns out, because now I am curious.

I have Sprint, I was just refering to the "watcher" software that came on the disk. Will give it a try and let you know.

You are right I am glad to say. The old software on the disk would not let mange the update it but using the pcs connection manager (same as merlin s620) I was able to set the mode on the 580 to EVDO only. Even better is the fact that that there is a built in pic compresion optimizer now so no more having to change the browser user agent or dload another program.

I am really glad that everything worked out for ya! Im surprised with a newer card you got older software. Go figure. I wouldnt install that Bytemobile Optimizer, it sucks! It caused some weierd issues for me and a few other members on this board. Unfortunately, even with the software, you still cant control the software compression. What I typically do to clean up pages that have been optimized, is do CTRL + F5. It will re-load the page with the normal images. Its an extra step, but it works.
