OK, I have the V620 on a 15 day trial from Verizon and got it working but the menu bar icon is greyed out (and I understand why). Does the 5220 card give you all of the functionality of the menu bar icon, unlike the V620? Has anyone any opinion regarding using the 5220 over the V620? OR, should I just be content that the darn thing (the V620) works? I'm needing to decide whether to switch to the 5220 or keep the V620 in the next few days.
Thanks in advance!

Will there ever be a V620 driver that brings back the full functionality of the menu bar icon?
Thanks in advance!

Currently,

Only the PC 5220 card will give you the signal strength indicator and if you are in 1xRTT or EVDO (and holding down option, allows you to Activate = update PRL).

This will NOT change in Tiger - it appears that no additional EVDO PC cards have been added for support.

We are investigating build a generic app to do this for other EVDO PC Cards.

Once we have the v620 working (and mine is working fine now), do we always have to go through a Win box to update PRL's, or can we do this from the Mac?

How do we do this? I don't see the command in signal strength menu.

I found out that to send outgoing email we have to call Verizon and have them set up some sort of registration on their server. Verizon tech told me i should have been told that when I bought it but i wasn't.

You also have to set up the outgoing authentification. Call them for info.

Their wireless data techs are pretty good and willing to help Mac users. They tell me that they're getting a LOT of calls from Mac people. One guy said 10-20%. He also said that Verizon is working with Apple to set up a formal relationship and to institute official support.

You only have to call, if you want to use their outgoing email servers. They will give you the smtp outgoing address and a name and password (for SMTP Authentication). You do not need to do this, if you are using your own SMTP server or even Mac.com.

If you want to use Verizon's outgoing mail server:

you need to go to ACCOUNTS and click on SERVER SETTINGS and you can select AUTHENTICATION type and enter the name and password that Verizon gives you over the phone.

I am posting this from my Mac Powerbook with my new Verizon Novatel v620 wireless card and account. I had all the problems mentioned in this thread after setting up the card using the EVDOInfo's fine directions and switching phone numbers didn't work.

So I installed Verizon's VZACCESS software on a PC/windows laptop and put the card in there first. the setup software indicated that my card had not been activated. I clicked to activate, got a message that the NAM was being updated and presto online on the PC. Swapped back into my Mac and here we are...

I also had to initiate the card on a PC to get it to work.

I went thru all the steps indicated here to get the V620 up and running.
Got as far as dialing but kept disconnecting and a modem error message
would pop up.

Installed the Verizon software on an XP laptop and activated the card
there and then plugged it back into the Powerbook and it works fine.

Hi guys,

Just got a V620 card last night after reading through all these excellent posts, but haven't been able to get it working. V620 card and service, activated on a windows laptop and works, 15" PB running OSX 10.3.9.

Just downloaded Installer from Michael (thank you), and restarted, several times, but nothing happens when I insert the card, or when I restart it with the card already in. The only indications that there is anything at all is a PCcard icon in the menu bar that says unknown vendor and power off.

My System Profile shows Novatel Wireless Merlin CDMA, Product ID: 4368, which was the same as before.

I have tried opening Terminal to enter some commands, but it recognizes none of the ones shown in the instructions. I can't change any of the settings in System Profile, I tried opening Edit Text but that is just a wordpad that doesn't get sent to any part of the system software. I tried changing Internal Modem to the V5220, but that really the internal modem inside the machine and it keeps looking for a telephone cord to be plugged in. I'm confused, and I'm normally an intelligent guy.

What am I doing wrong? And would it be possible for someone to summarize the real steps in excruiciatingly painful baby-steps (other than "hey, just change your .kext and do a plist" which means nothing to me), such as: where in Terminal located, when you open it what do you really type in, do you need to capitalize the letters?, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Ian

Alrighty then, at least I figured out how to get into Terminal, spaces and capital letters do seem very important.

After installing Michael's installer, I can verify that the AppleVerizonSupport.kext shows a change of IDVendor to 5136, and a IDProduct to 4368, as it should be.

However, in AppleVerizonSupportKicker.kext there is only idProduct 4368, and no sign of idVendor as implied, but not stated, in the summary of changes. Does this make a difference? If so, how would I get idVendor to appear when it doesn't?

I have rebuilt the kernal extensions according to directions, too. and shutdown and restarted several times.

Still do not get any dialog box when inserting card, just a blinking green light and an unresponsive PCcard image in menu bar with a greyed out Unknown Vendor and USB Controller, and a workable Power Off Card menu.

suggestions?

Something got messed up in your files, I would re-install the Apple Verizon drivers at the link found in this page:

http://www.evdoinfo.com/Downloads/Drivers/Mac_OS_X_Verizon_Drivers_2005021554/

AND then run the installer that I sent to you.

See, if that fixes it.

OK...Got my V620 today. Followed all the steps in the instructions. Inserted my card. It shows up as a "Novatel Wireless Merlin CDMA", is this correct? The instructions said it would be an "AirPrime CDMA Wireless PC Card".

When I try to connect, it quickly disconnects and I get a generic error message "A modem error has occoured. Please check your settings and try again" The card has a blinking green light on it. I have tried the *22899 number, but that didn't work either.

If anyone could tell me if i'm heading the right direction here, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Michael,

I reloaded the Apple drivers as suggested, restarted, the reloaded your V620 Installer, then restarted, but still nothing.

No dialog box, no recognition, just a blinking green light, and a menu bar that shows Unknown Vendor.

rrr... Am I missing something very simple?

I *was* using my own server (earthlink) but that was the problem. I couldn't get to the earthlink smtp server through the Verizon server.

At least that's how it worked for me. I had the same problem at work going through the cable company's server to get to my smtp earthlink server.

Maybe it's an earthlink thing.
